About Andrew
I studied Classics at Durham University, graduating with a First Class degree before completing an MPhil at Cambridge University. My research focussed particularly on Latin literature, but also encompassed Roman history and political philosophy. At school, I undertook a wide range of GCSEs and then the IB, receiving full marks (45). As a result I am very well placed to teach Latin and Ancient Greek, as well as other areas of classical study, at all stages. In addition, I would be very happy to tutor English and History at IB level, as well as Maths at GCSE standard. I have just completed my Graduate Diploma in Law (law conversion course), and I am therefore prepared to teach law as well.
My eclectic teaching experience has prepared me well for all kinds of students. I have taught younger pupils in the school Combined Cadet Force, children and young adults in rural Rwanda, recovering drug addicts and ex-triad members in Hong Kong, and prisoners in the UK. I believe I am friendly and approachable, with a great enthusiasm for learning, which I hope to pass on to my tutees. I look to be patient and supportive to those who are finding a subject difficult, and to be an encouragement to those who are already excelling and wish to be pushed further.
Outside of my academic studies, my interests include debating (which I taught in prisons this year), current affairs and a wide range of sports, particularly cricket and tennis.

Andrew is a highly qualified graduate in his specialised subjects. He is reliable, diligent and patient with good communication skills to provide tutoring services.I am delighted to be writing in support of Andrew Martin. After taking a stellar undergraduate degree at Durham University, Andrew enrolled in the one-year MPHIL programme in Classics at the University of Cambridge in 2017–18, where I acted as his main supervisor. The core of our programme consists of three research essays (with the topics chosen by the student in consultation with their supervisor over the course of the year), followed by an MPHIL dissertation of c. 10,000 words written in the summer term. Andrew decided to focus on Roman political thought in the late republican period, with a focus on Cicero. Issues that came within the range of his research included Rome’s imperial expansion in the Greek East (and the repercussions of foreign conquest on domestic politics), the breakdown of constitutional consensus and the attempt to justify illegal measures in times of public emergencies and outright civil warfare, and Cicero’s conception of ‘the people’ in his orations and philosophical writings. As his main supervisor, I got to know Andrew very well indeed and can attest to his outstanding intellectual and personal qualities, such as his self-reliance, independence, integrity, and reliability. His social skills and intellectual abilities are equally impressive. During his time in Cambridge he conducted original research and articulated his findings in lucid prose; he has shown the motivation and determination to succeed in an academic profession; and both in one-to-one supervisions and larger group sessions he demonstrated great talent to interact constructively with peers and supervisors. I am convinced that he would make an excellent tutor.
