Amanda tutored our two daughters in science and maths last year, the elder through her GCSEs,
the younger in her 11+ exams.
I am almost at a loss to convey just how good a tutor Amanda is. My girls are not naturally inclined
towards the sciences or maths, and yet they passed their exams with flying colours. Further, and
more importantly, they actually learned things that have stayed with them (rather than just
cramming for the exams) and indeed the younger is now doing really well in—and enjoying—maths
at secondary school.
Amanda is personable, low-key, patient and very understanding of the difficulties that youngsters
get themselves in over apparently insoluble problems. There were many occasions when my
daughters would emerge from a session saying “it’s great; I really understand that point now”. Yet
she is also able, very gently, to crack the whip when needs be and the girls became very
conscientious about doing “her” homework as well as the school’s. She is punctual and never missed a session.
As to her academics, they are plainly so far beyond mine in the sciences (I studied languages at
Oxford) that I scarcely feel equipped to comment. Even on my limited questioning of her on certain
points, it was abundantly clear that she knew her stuff.
My wife and I (and our daughters) unhesitatingly recommend Amanda, and indeed the younger
(now in Year 7) is already asking if we can “reserve” her for when she does her GCSEs. I feel that
says it all.
