About Amanda

I am a graduate of Oxford University and a qualified teacher with over 30 years’ teaching experience. I offer online tuition in secondary maths and English, including GCSE maths, English language and literature, philosophy and critical thinking.

In addition to teaching roles, I have worked in senior management roles at independent schools, both overseas and in the UK. In these roles, I have particularly enjoyed guiding students in their career and academic pathways. I have been involved in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as a teacher and programme coordinator. I also have experience of working with students who have special educational needs, as well as students for whom English is a second language.

My approach to teaching maths, for example, is first of all to find out what my student’s aims are. I assess my student to see their strengths and any gaps in their knowledge, so that we can develop a personal plan. I like to this through discussion with the student, because I think it’s important for them to engage actively in their own development. When starting a new topic, I like to explore it with the student, asking questions to give them a chance to think things through actively. I use diagrams, pictures, examples, and technology like graphing and geometry apps. For example, working on equations is much more interesting when you can see what the equation looks like when it is drawn on a graphing app and it really helps students to understand the topic better. We then practise the topic with exercises chosen at a level which will first support and then challenge the student. Effective communication is really important, so I aim to help my students to develop their accurate use of mathematical terminology and to express themselves fluently. To consolidate, I set follow-up exercises and activities for homework to do before the next lesson. I send the exercises together with feedback about the lesson to the students and to their parents. As a teacher and also a parent myself, I know just how important it is for parents to be in the loop, so that they know what their child is doing in lessons and for homework, and so that they can give any support needed.

For A level and specialist areas, such as IB and philosophy, I charge higher hourly rates. Please contact me before booking to discuss the specific needs of the student.
