About Amanda
I am a graduate of Oxford University and a qualified teacher with over 30 years’ teaching experience. I offer online tuition in secondary maths and English, including GCSE maths, English language and literature, philosophy and critical thinking.
In addition to teaching roles, I have worked in senior management roles at independent schools, both overseas and in the UK. In these roles, I have particularly enjoyed guiding students in their career and academic pathways. I have been involved in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as a teacher and programme coordinator. I also have experience of working with students who have special educational needs, as well as students for whom English is a second language.
My approach to teaching maths, for example, is first of all to find out what my student’s aims are. I assess my student to see their strengths and any gaps in their knowledge, so that we can develop a personal plan. I like to this through discussion with the student, because I think it’s important for them to engage actively in their own development. When starting a new topic, I like to explore it with the student, asking questions to give them a chance to think things through actively. I use diagrams, pictures, examples, and technology like graphing and geometry apps. For example, working on equations is much more interesting when you can see what the equation looks like when it is drawn on a graphing app and it really helps students to understand the topic better. We then practise the topic with exercises chosen at a level which will first support and then challenge the student. Effective communication is really important, so I aim to help my students to develop their accurate use of mathematical terminology and to express themselves fluently. To consolidate, I set follow-up exercises and activities for homework to do before the next lesson. I send the exercises together with feedback about the lesson to the students and to their parents. As a teacher and also a parent myself, I know just how important it is for parents to be in the loop, so that they know what their child is doing in lessons and for homework, and so that they can give any support needed.
For A level and specialist areas, such as IB and philosophy, I charge higher hourly rates. Please contact me before booking to discuss the specific needs of the student.

Perfect! Amanda is very good at Teaching maths. She goes through the math problems with my daughter in small simple steps. She gives a written feedback after every class which is very helpful as a parent to know what has been discussed and how your child is doing. Thanks Amanda.
Perfect! Amanda is fantastic - she took my son up 3 grades to a 9. She provided focussed, structured and highly effective tutoring with thorough communication to both student and parent between lessons but was patient and kind - I would recommend her in a heartbeat.

I find it difficult to add anything to the already excellent reviews Amanada has been given. She took on my grandson online, and they clicked from the outset. Every week he progressed through and understood each topic they covered. I am now waiting until A Levels, and will certainly come back again. Thank you Amanda.

Amanda provided excellent support and guidance for our son for English GCSE. He liked Amanda immediately and found her 'helpful and kind'.
As a parent I found her a great communicator, organised, methodical and managed to push him without ever making him feel stressed. I think Amanda is great at providing structured, focussed work that stretched my son whilst also being encouraging and helping with confidence and self-belief - which is exactly what you want from a tutor!Amanda has been tutoring my daughter Zoe for the last few weeks. Zoe has progressed from a level 5 in maths to a 7. Amanda has been very professional, supportive and encouraging and has adapted her style to suit Zoe. Work has been personalised and sent in a very timely manner.
I would not hesitate to recommend Amanda or utilise her skills in the future with A Levels. A first class maths tutor and lovely lady.I was Amanda's PGCE tutor last year. During her training she made a very good impression on teachers she worked with. Her reports from school noted that she was positive and committed, she went 'above and beyond the call of duty', all pupils made progress, she could adapt her teaching very well to meet the needs of individuals. She was able to assess the effectiveness of her teaching; her questioning and how she addressed misconceptions was excellent. She produced some excellent resources and made good use of praise. She created a safe and supportive learning environment using a variety of learning strategies. She gave helpful and constructive feedback to pupils.
