About Amanda
I have been teaching History, Philosophy and Religious Studies’ at A level and Degree level for more than 20 years. Currently I am teaching IGCSE and A Levels and I specialise in teaching and supporting students who are home schooled and/or taking GCSEs or A levels through distance learning. This involves regular lessons, marking, feedback, help with UCAS, references etc. I have been a head of department and head of the Humanities faculty in an outstanding sixth form college. I am an outstanding teacher, with a proven record of achievement for all learners and success in terms of the personal achievements of students and results. I have an excellent knowledge of a variety specifications and am an examiner for both Philosophy A Level and History A level so I have up to date knowledge of the exam requirements.
I am also a published author of revision guides for Religious Studies and of two books on Aristotle and the political philosopher Hannah Arendt.
Since 2008, I have been the lead developer on the Philosophy and Religious Studies A level for the National Extension College (NEC), a college specialising in the distance learning of A levels for a variety of students. This involved writing and revising coursebooks (textbooks) for A Level Philosophy AQA and Religious Studies Edexcel A level through several specification changes, responding to the different demands of the exam and content, including study tips, exam tips, wider reading and activities. My work has been recognised by Edexcel who have approached the NEC to endorse our material on A Level Religious Studies and I have been published by Hodder Education: Philosophy of Religion and Ethics for the Edexcel Religious Studies A level as an A level revision guide.
I have also written resources for AS Thinking Skills (TSA) for the NEC and I have supported students in taking a variety of admissions tests such as the BMAT, LNAT, HAT, Oxbridge admissions and I have prepared students for Oxbridge interviews with great success.
1:1 tutoring is a personal experience, and it is important that the student and I are comfortable with each other, with this in mind I always like to have a short pre-meeting with parents and students to talk about their needs and to discuss ways forward that suit everyone. I also keep in touch with parents, with regular updates on progress, topics covered, and essays written. Communication is very important between a tutor and client and makes for a successful outcome. As a teacher in a school for many years I have a great deal of experience in study skills, supporting a variety of students, those who need support through illness and mental health issues, those with dyslexia and other educational needs as well as those aiming for Oxbridge. As an example: I am currently tutoring, through this site, a degree level student in his first year of history, an A level student in both Religious Studies and History, an adult learner overseas who is taking history A level and supporting him through his application to university.
Through tutoring I have found a way to support students from all backgrounds, ages and areas to achieve their academic goals.

Perfect! Highly recommended
Amanda helped my son prepare for his History A Level, and it has been fantastic to see how much his confidence and enjoyment of history has grown with her patient guidance. When starting with Amanda he was still uncomfortable with the demands of A-level history, and especially on how to write a good essay. She quickly gave him the tools and skills he didn't seem to be getting from school, and it was a joy to see his enthusiasm grow with his improving results. He really looked forward to his sessions with her. He was predicted a C. He got an A. We are both certain that would not have happened without Amanda. Many thanks!
