Experienced tutor, motivator and life skills coach

Hello, I am Allan.....

I enjoy changing people’s lives by helping them to learn, understand, and grow, whatever the subject or level. My approach is based on teaching people how to learn and leading them towards the answer so that they gain the knowledge and confidence to answer increasingly difficult and more complex questions. This works for everyone regardless of age or subject but in particular I believe it is the best approach for anyone studying for exams or assessments. Students in this position always have issues with confidence and invariably need help with exam technique, timing, accuracy, reviewing questions, and getting into an “exam” frame of mind.

Bringing passion and focus and a “you are capable of anything” attitude to the struggling student in conjunction with the technical elements of the subject makes a very strong impression and goes beyond simply working on subject matter. All students I have tutored, especially the children with Special Needs (comprehension, OCD, ADD, ADHD, etc), have realised during our time together that they are truly gifted in at least one area. Bringing this out of them gives a huge boost in everything they are doing, whether it is academia or sports or hobbies or simply their opinion of themselves and where they are going in life.

So, to explain my background:
- I am married and a father to three wonderful kids (a married daughter of 28 and two sons 14 and 8) who share my passion and drive to achieve.
- With more than 25 years international cross-cultural experience as an MBA-qualified trainer, lecturer, and workshop facilitator, I have designed and delivered many training courses and workshops for individuals, corporate teams, non-profit organizations, public/private sector board members, and consultants.
- For the last 6 years I have also been tutoring adults and younger students (typically from 6 to 13) in a range of academic, extra-curricular and life development subjects (please see the indicative but by no means exhaustive list below – I can motivate people and improve their performance in any subject).

I am typically available during the day as well as the evenings and can be available for a few hours on both Saturday and Sunday as the need arises. Please contact me if you have a particular time in mind and I will try to fit you in to my current schedule. To make it easier for you, I will also add a lesson covering the agreed time frame so you can simply book the lesson in one go, rather than combining hours/sessions.
As for location, I am based in Egham in Surrey and am happy to drive for up to 60 minutes to get to you, so this takes in all of Surrey, Berkshire, Middlesex, and most of London.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Excellent Maths and English tutor and all-round motivator

I highly recommend Allan as a private tutor. His caring, patient and skillful approach encouraged my daughter – a teenager – to discover her competitive edge and to want to succeed and come top of her class and not just get by.

He identified how my daughter could progress in GCSE English Language and Maths and he worked with her to set clear and well-defined progress targets and collaboratively they worked to achieve those targets in both subjects.

In a short time she achieved a 30% improvement in her marks when sitting mock papers and we expect her to move to the top sets very soon.

Very professional, patient, focused tutor

Allan has been working with my 9-year old son with a view to improving his overall performance at school and build his confidence in literacy. My son had been found to have comprehension difficulties and therefore the tutor we chose needed to have patience and commitment as well as be varied enough in his approach to make the lessons interesting for a young child. Allan has been able to build trust between himself and my son and, in addition to the technical and academic elements, they have been playing “games” that have significantly improved my son’s language skills and verbal communication abilities. I have the highest respect for his approach to my son’s problems and the ease with which he dealt with them.
Educational Psychology
Substantial improvement in data and detail retention and understanding, improved vocabulary, increase in focus, and ongoing improvement in the ability to express feelings and explain concepts.

Excellent Maths and English tutor and all-round motivator

This is a follow-up to my earlier reference for Allan. Since tutoring my daughter Julia in Maths and English as well as helping her with her attitude and approach to school work in general, she has recently been assessed for and immediately accepted into both Kew House and St. Georges Ascot, both highly rated private schools. St. Georges even offered for her to sit their scholarship exams. We are so pleased with the work that Allan has done with Julia and we cannot thank him enough.
English (Common Entrance)
Transfer from the state system and acceptance into 2 private schools, Kew House and St. Georges Ascot. St. Georges was chosen and Julia will be sitting their scholarship level entrance exams in May. W
