English Tutor, Career Coach and Published Author

My love for learning English was shaped throughout my life from school age through creative writing, reading and grammar. I knew I wanted to work in a capacity that I could share knowledge and keep learning and developing as a person, which I am now doing – working within education and language.

One reason I enjoy tutoring is the encouragement and support I give to students that enhances their intellectual development, which benefits them not only in college, but throughout their lifetime.

At present I’m working as an English tutor, teaching SQA up to National 5 and organising lesson plans for effective delivery to my students and also for Glasgow Clyde College as an Education Support Worker, recently within ESOL classes.

As a tutor, I’ve had experience of providing an innovative approach to tuition (also within a voluntary capacity). I actively work with students to identify which teaching method best suits their skillset, using plenary teaching methods for understanding.

I also currently work as a self-employed Career Development Consultant, running my own business which I have been doing since 2014. I've worked on various employability projects, one with students who have had problems at school and are no longer working under the school curriculum and therefore will not be sitting exams, and another being redundancy, following the closure of BHS, within my local community at the time, Clydebank. I collaborated with my local newspaper, The Clydebank Post, along with my local DWP whereby I offered a six week coaching course on interview tips and techniques, confidence building and CV/application form writing, which resulted in 67% of candidates securing employment by the end of the course. I created and implemented the programmes and this was followed and reported on weekly in the paper. Myself and the Clydebank Post received commendation in Scottish Parliament and backing of 18 MSPs on this project.

I also hold career development workshops which I design, create and implement myself, including on application form, CV content and interview tips and techniques. I work in partnership with schools to ensure that the students understood what was asked of them, and held a follow-up session to ensure this was the case.

I possess excellent communication skills and fully understand the demands of the role. I am a resourceful individual with a genuine interest in people. I am a friendly and approachable person who is committed to any role I undertake. I can effectively liaise with clients face-to-face, through email and telephone calls whilst troubleshooting queries. I also have experience of assisting in interviews, screening candidates and liaising with clients regarding vacancy and advertising placements. I also have excellent written communication skills. In 2015 I wrote and published a career development book, entitled “Creating Your Classic Career.”

I’ve facilitated the development of others as an employability coach and also as a training mentor at KPMG where I was a skillset coordinator for ADVANCE programme, which was a six month personal and professional development course for support staff. I had to monitor and mark assessments and make sure the skillsets records were fully up-to-date with appropriate evidence of the work undertaken before they could graduate from this course.

I hold a relevant PVG disclosure for working with children and vulnerable adults, a clean driver’s licence and my own transport and am a trained First Aider and H&S Assessor.
