About Alison

I have a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Modern Foreign Languages from the University of Sheffield and many years of experience teaching students of all ages. In addition, I have a CELTA qualification and tutor ESL/ESOL/EFL students in either General English, IELTS, Cambridge exam preparation, Business English, or English for Academic Study. I can also help with proofreading and dissertation checking.

I have a BA in Politics and studied at the prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris. I have also lived in both Germany and Spain and continue to develop my own language skills through regular practice and interaction with native speakers. I am passionate about language learning and like to think that I pass that enthusiasm on to my students.

English

Hi, I'm Alison and I'm a native English speaker from the UK. Need help with GCSE or A-Level preparation? Looking to improve your spoken or written English? You're absolutely in the right place! I not only have excellent knowledge of the various exam requirements, but also aim to inspire my students with a lifelong love of learning languages.

My lessons aim to increase confidence in each of the key skills - Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking - and are targeted at those areas each individual student needs most support in so as to increase the chances of boosting their grade.

Classes are usually conducted via Zoom and I use a variety of different techniques in order to engage my students, including flashcards, audio and video clips, grammar exercises, games and more. It all depends on the level and what outcomes are expected, but in my over 10 years of teaching online, it's a great way to learn, the resources are many and varied and I can usually find something to motivate the most reluctant student!

I am a fully qualified and experienced language teacher with over 20 years of experience. I tutor FRENCH (to Advanced Level and beyond), GERMAN and SPANISH (to GCSE / Intermediate Level) and ENGLISH Language (ESL/ESOL/EAL/EFL) at all levels, all completely tailored to individual requirements and with the aim of encouraging students to feel much more confident with the language from the very first lesson.

I can help to increase your fluency through a thorough understanding of grammar in the context of writing and translation skills, alongside speaking and pronunciation practice with a focus on accuracy. I also offer intensive catch-up sessions for Years 7, 8 and 9 which may benefit those students who have fallen a bit behind.

I also teach all of these languages to adults so, whether you are a complete beginner looking to take up a new hobby, or to brush up on those rusty language skills in preparation for your next holiday, I am here to help!

Find out more about Alison

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I have been learning French since I was at school and was inspired to study French politics at university after an exchange trip and later a year spent working as an au-pair. I spent a year studying at the prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris and have continued to love and learn the language ever since. I am a particular fan of French cinema! Whilst at university, I also started studying German and was awarded a summer study scholarship to Osnabrück, a city which was twinned with my hometown. I started learning Spanish on my own too and a love of wine and food have led me to enjoy many happy trips to various parts of Spain!
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

As a fan of French cinema, my favourite actor is Juliette Binoche. Her commitment to truth and freedom speaks volumes.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I love the fact that in France there are days which are dedicated to Cinema and to Music, where everyone is invited to participate for free. Art and culture are such an integral part of the French landscape, I find that wonderful.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking other languages allows me to not only communicate with other people, but helps me to understand their culture and way of thinking too. It teaches me a lot, something which I like to share with my students.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Grammar is seen as the main obstacle to learning a language, but if you think of it as simply the building blocks of communication, it becomes much more relevant. Making mistakes is an important part of the process and we should never be afraid to just give it a go!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was at primary school, my French tutor told me that I would never be able to speak the language properly. I have gone on to study at one of France's top universities and to share my love of learning French with many, many people. Don't ever let other people tell you that you can't do something!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I was an au-pair in France for a year and I studied in Paris on a university exchange year too. I have also lived in Germany and Spain and travelled extensively in these countries too.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I encourage my students to believe that they CAN from the very first lesson. There's no such thing as making silly mistakes, we learn to communicate more confidently from the beginning, whatever the level. I use a variety of different resources to tap into each student's specific needs and objectives and I have a very high success rate. I love learning languages and I like to think that I pass that enthusiasm onto my students.
