About Alexis

Learn how to learn as best you can and grab those grades!

I have accrued over 11 thousand hours of experience during my 12 years of tutoring. This teaching time has put me in contact with a vast array of students whose backgrounds range from those on free school meals, to those whose families are household names and even royalty. The teaching needs of these students have been equally diverse, from those aiming for scholarships and straight As, to those who are struggling to pass due to anything from motivational/emotional issues, learning difficulties such as dyslexia/aspergers/autism, bad organisation, language issues, missed school or poor health.

Ultimately, this experience has vividly portrayed how each individual has a particular combination of individual needs, when tutoring my goal is to understand what those needs are and tailor my approach to them. This tailored approach is at the hart of making any teaching time as effective and efficient as it possibly can be, regardless of whether it focuses on the technical aspects of a subject, a pupil’s motivation/engagement/interest in a subject, or, the organisational aspects of exam preparation.

My experience has also included working as head of science within a tutorial school, tutoring at Harrow School and much work with students aiming for entry to academic institutions at 11 +, 13 + and up to Oxbridge. As such, I am also able to offer advice on the choice of academic institution, entry to it, subject choices and the how subject choices dictate possible career paths.

My interest in education was sparked at university, where my final year project focused on how to make science teaching as engaging as possible. It was motivated by the belief that education can be one of the best forms of entertainment around; the more you know about the world around you the more fascinating it should become. This still informs my approach to tuition and my current work writing/producing interactive documentaries aimed at CGSE science and maths students.

A skilled tutor

Written by Angela H
Alexis has tutored my son in science for several
months. He has taken into account our requirements
and has been flexible in dealing with various requests
about the topics to be covered. There is no doubt
that his tutoring has increased my son’s understanding
of the subjects involved.

Alexis has bonded well with my son and has made an intense
tutoring experience enjoyable and interesting. The fact that my
son is happy to have tutoring on a weekend is in no small part due
to the effort Alexis makes to identify with his pupils.

Outcome:
On going

A terrific tutor

Written by Catherine W
Alexis has tutored our son in science and maths for 6+ months preparing him for Common Entrance and London day school entry exams. It has made a tremendous difference to our son's confidence and school exam marks, and he was very well prepared for his school entry tests. Alexis is a very calm and caring tutor, teaching beyond the syllabus so that our son has a broad understanding of the work and can apply it easily. I can't recommend Alexis more highly - always insightful, prompt, engaging and achieving terrific results. He has made a real contribution to our son's education and is a highly skilled tutor.
Outcome:
Offered places in 3 highly competitive London Day Schools and school exam results went up 15%

GCSE Maths and Science Tutor

Written by Catherine W
Alexis S worked for our family over five academic years tutoring our son in Science and Maths from 13+ exam preparation through to GCSE level.

I cannot recommend a tutor more highly. Alexis is an excellent tutor both in all respects - subject knowledge, exam technique, confidence building, tailoring content to the level of the student with his emotional intelligence matching his emotional intelligence. He started with 1 hour sessions, moving up to 1.5 and 2 hour sessions as necessary. He was always punctual and well prepared with a lesson plan for each session.

In the GCSE tutoring, Alexis covered Maths, Physics, Biology and Chemistry with our son who was working to B and C grades in all. His exam grades were considerably higher achieving all A and B grades.

His communication skills are excellent, informing the parents of progress and aims, and also giving clear instructions to the student to continue their progress. I found Alexis to be professional at all times and helped our son find his way through some challenging work. It was with some regret that our son passed all his GCSE exams well and went into his A levels no longer needing support. Alexis is very much missed in our family.

Outstanding Tutoring

Written by Sandra B
We highly recommend Alexis.
Our daughter hated Maths during her primary school years. When she started secondary school and the academic demands increased, it became apparent that she was struggling to assimilate the information she was given.
Following the advice of an educational phycologist and in agreement with the school she started tutoring with Alexis.
He soon understood that what she needed was not to try harder but to learn differently. Alexis found the gaps she had from primary school and once those gaps where clarified he helped her to catch up with her school schedule very quickly. From being a C Maths student, in 2 years, she achieved an A result in her Maths GCSE.
