About Alexander

Oxford, vastly experienced. History/English/Politics/exams

Hello I'm Alexander. I studied at the University of Oxford, where I read Modern and Medieval History. I went to St Paul's School, London, leaving with A* A* A A at A-Level and x11 A*s at iGCSE.

Outside of tutoring I am an award-winning comedian, with six Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and shows across the UK and in the USA, Holland and France behind me. I have also written for BBC Radio 4 and The Independent. My debut solo show, 'Ringo', debuted last summer, and I was described as "a charismatic comic with bags of potential" by The List and "excellent" by Jack Dee. In 2014 I founded and now run my own improvisational comedy-theatre company, which runs workshops in schools, universities and access schemes.

I've been tutoring over the past four years. On Tutorfair alone I have amassed over 200 hours of one-on-one tutorials, and have only ever received 5* reviews from clients. I have taught students of mixed abilities, all of whom have noticed an upturn in their performances at school. I am particularly experienced in teaching History, English, Politics, school admissions and mock university interviews, writing personal statements and coursework, and exam study skills.

A range of my recent tutees includes a boy with issues concentrating for 10+ admissions; a girl seeking a scholarship at a leading independent girls school at 16+; and more than ten Oxbridge History candidates. My most recent Oxbridge tutee received an offer from Balliol College Oxford in January 2017. After Easter I am very often called in for 'last minute exam revision' with students struggling to knuckle down or remain motivated during exam season, and have developed a number of little tricks and techniques to overcome this. At its height last summer I tutored 21 students-per-week, all of whom were struggling to revise but all of whom performed very strongly their exams come results day.

I'm interested in advertising, and have recently had placements in the creative departments of agencies AMV BBDO and TBWA London. I'm passionate about helping charities - in September 2016 I raised over £1,200 for 'Refugee Action', and over £3,000 for 'Mind'. I'm also a trained drummer and percussionist, and have recorded alongside my father who is a professional musician.

I do prefer to discuss students and timescales with clients before arranging lessons rather than being 'booked cold', so please send me a message to talk about potential tutorials before any booking. (My 'availability' section is occasionally slightly out of sync too, so messaging is the best way of checking. A computer glitch says I take '1 week' to respond which certainly isn't the case, v frustrating!) I endeavour to respond to all messages within a few hours.

Best wishes, and I look forward to hearing from you,

AF

I have been tutoring for several years, and yet it is not often I come across a tutor so calm and helpful with their tutees, prepared, and able to offer his own techniques for understanding topics. I cannot recommend Alex enough

This is our first experience with a tutor and we couldn't be happier. We asked Alexander to help bring History to life for our son, and spark his engagement in the subject. My son really enjoyed the session. Alexander prepared well and came with loads of ideas of how to bring the subject to life. I would recommend him as a Tutor.

Very Effective Tutor

Written by Wei Ling M
This was our first experience of engaging a tutor and we are extremely pleased. My 12 year old son had some very specific questions regarding essay structure and analysis for Common Entrance History that were answered very effectively by Alexander. My son found his approach both friendly and engaging (a two hour session went by very quickly) and he found his ideas and suggestions extremely helpful.
Subject:
History (Common Entrance)
Outcome:
Our son feels he has a much clearer idea of what is required and how to structure and develop the ideas in an essay.

We feel very lucky to have found Alexander to support my daughter Annie weeks away from her History GCSE. The sessions she has had with Alexander have increased her confidence and ability substantially and even sparked a genuine interest in the subject. Alexander is friendly, approachable, experienced and very effective. He is well prepared for his sessions which are focused and tailored to the student's needs. I recommend him wholeheartedly.

I think Alex is versatile and inspirational tutor. He has helped my son in the run up to GCSE exams in exam technique, subject matter as well as his confidence. My son actually looked forward to the sessions with Alex who even flipped subjects to help out with English poetry which i was very grateful for. I have no hesitation in making this recommendation and have already passed Alex's details to other parents
