About Alexander
Available for online sessions to help students stay on top of their academics during these difficult times. Having taught six year olds through to PhD candidates I've had a very wide range of students and I am confident that I can help them not just maintain their academic performance while they are off school but actually ensure they continue to make strides forward in their learning.
PhD in Economics and Econometrics (Mathematics for Economics) at the University of Cambridge + have completed all three levels of the CFA exams ranking in the top 10% for each level . I'm a Kiwi who came to Britain after receiving a full scholarship to Cambridge to study economics as an undergraduate, and after falling in love with the country and the people I decided to stay here to complete my Masters and PhD - focussing on the mathematical elements of economics throughout. I was fortunate enough to twice represent Cambridge University in the World Championships for Econometrics (a combination of mathematical and statistical techniques tailored to economics), as well as compete in (and win) the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race during my time at university.
In my native New Zealand, I tutored from the age of fourteen until I left for Cambridge University four years later in all three sciences, maths, economics and accounting for students across all years of secondary school by the time I had finished myself. I also have extensive teaching experience from the four years of my PhD, being both a teaching fellow and a college supervisor at Cambridge University. I have taught mathematics, statistics, finance and economics to over 350 undergraduate and graduate students (typically in groups of 1-3 students at a time), receiving strong positive feedback for communicating difficult concepts and for inspiring motivation and enthusiasm among students. I was ranked "by far best PhD teacher” of the twenty PhD students teaching at the Cambridge Economics Faculty according to the official faculty summary of anonymous student surveys on teacher performance 2016. In addition to university level teaching, I also took students privately for GCSEs and A-levels in both economics and maths.
I am passionate about helping my students reach their potential, as both my university and school students can attest to. I take particular satisfaction in helping students that may doubt their own abilities to grow in confidence - something that I find can help them not only with the subject matter at hand but outside of the classroom as well.

Alex tutored me in a quantitative economics paper at university. He was always highly supportive and was enthusiastic about the subject content. He was particularly good at breaking down more complex problems into the fundamental intuition, which was much better for learning in the long-term than simply walking through the steps alone.
In my capacity as director of studies for Economics at Corpus Christi College Cambridge I relied on Dr Ross for the supervision of first year undergraduate Corpus students in mathematics over two years. He was extremely well liked by the students who found him to be a very good tutor and provided a great deal of feedback for their work. I was upset when he left and I had to find alternative arrangements. I cannot recommend Alex enough, he was superb and extremely reliable.
Alex was my Mathematics tutor for the quantitative module of the Cambridge Economics course. The First I got at the end of the year was all thanks to him and I simply can't be grateful enough for all his help and expertise. Not only is he extremely talented in the fields of Maths and Economics, but crucially he is a cracking chap and so easy to get along with. The perfect tutor in every, the best thing about him is that it's so clear he takes genuine pride and enjoys helping people understand the subject he loves.
In my first year at Cambridge, Alex tutored me for one of my modules and for that I've been incredibly grateful to him. Alex has a way of enlivening any study material and make various concepts and theories appear quite simple and straightforward. I wholeheartedly recommend Alex to anyone for his tutorship.
In my three years at Cambridge University, Alex was easily the best supervisor I had. I had many great supervisors, but Alex approached things in a way which was intuitive, appealing, and in a way that would maximise my results. He knew the courses extremely well, and even taught us beyond the courses for our own benefit and in order to impress in the exams.
Anything difficult became easy after his supervisions. Outstanding teacher.Mr. Ross was my supervisor for Statistics during my first year at Cambridge University. Having arrived with virtually no background in Statistics, Mr. Ross's supervisions were crucial for increasing my understanding of statistics and econometrics. His supervisions were the main contributor to my First Class grade for Statistics in my first year. Furthermore, the solid foundation in statistics that I gained thanks to Mr. Ross's tutoring encouraged me to take on more advanced courses in statistics and econometrics in second and third year, which I completed with good grades.
Alex has tutored me for Maths, Statistics and Economics and has an excellent way of explaining things. Concepts that initially seemed very complex suddenly became much clearer after only one session with Alex.
He is very easy to get on with during with tutorials and was always happy to make himself available outside of sessions to answer any questions effectively.
I can't praise him highly enough.Mr Alex Ross taught my first year Maths and Statistics tutorial classes. He was always well prepared; all set works were marked with high accuracy and was accompanied with clear explanations. He came to all lessons well prepared. Alex was always highly articulate, and could always find good analogies to help students grasp new concepts more easily. In addition, his enthusiasm and dedication created a wonderful learning environment. He is extremely intelligent, and I have no doubt that he will excel at teaching.
Alex has been an excellent maths tutor. He is very good at breaking down complicated mathematical concepts, and explaining them clearly. He also gives a lot of time and extra effort to his students, often offering to mark extra work and to answer questions outside of our regular classes.
Alex was my tutor over four successive years at Cambridge University for a wide range of subjects. Each lesson with him was always extremely helpful and enjoyable.
Among the numerous tutors in Cambridge, Alex stands out as he is able to understand quickly and explain clearly the concepts I was struggling with.
Both in economic subjects, mathematics and statistics, he provides intuitive illustrations behind complex ideas or formulas, which makes it easier to understand and remember them.
On a more personal level, Alex is very open and friendly and I always feel comfortable sharing my worries and asking him all types of questions.
Finally, he is an inspiring tutor as he has excelled both in academia, tennis, water polo and rowing -just Google him!Alex Ross tutored me in the first year Mathematics paper of the Cambridge University Economics course. He was an outstanding teacher and tutor, with a knack for explaining things and spotting where issues and potential pitfalls lay.
He is extremely enthusiastic and always put maximum effort into educating myself and my peers. I'd absolutely recommend him.Alex is an extremely well informed, engaging, helpful and patient tutor, who has tutored a number of my youngsters for both maths and economics. He is very well qualified and has been through the Cambridge University degree system, both for his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He taught numerous students whilst at Cambridge University and received teaching awards in recognition of his value. Not only is Alex a gifted tutor, he is also a very pleasant young man - and one who can keep students inspired and motivated (not always an easy task!). He is an excellent role model for those aiming high and is very patient with those who need a little extra help. I would recommend him without any reservation.
Alex taught me Mathematics and Statistics (Quantitative Methods) in my first year of university. He not only explained concepts carefully and thoroughly, but he placed real emphasis on making sure all the students had a solid intuitive economic understanding of all the topics we covered. He also went far beyond the first year course to ensure we could cope with any unexpected questions. An excellent supervisor all round, and I would recomment him highly.
Alex was my first year supervisor at Cambridge teaching maths and stats.
Supervisions with him were engaging and extremely helpful.Alex worked as my supervisor in University of Cambridge where he taught the math part of economics tripos. Alex is a very effective teacher, he always marks our work carefully with comments and suggestions, and never miss any small mistakes, which indeed improves the accuracy of my work. I really enjoyed his supervisions where he provided clear solutions and useful extensions so that I can learn the materials in depth. When preparing for tripos, he was very generous to have additional supervisions with us, and replied our emails with various questions in time. I will certainly miss seeing him in supervision rooms.
