About Alex
Hi - I'm an experienced tutor with a broad professional and academic background, here to support your learning at GCSE, A-Level or university level. : )
I've worked as an SEN teaching assistant across all subjects, supporting pupils in years 10 and 11, whilst providing general classroom support in a mainstream academy and in special provision. I've also volunteered with a tutoring charity, providing support to pupils on the C/D (i.e. today 3/4) GCSE borderline.
Succeeding at GCSE and A-level means getting to know the exam papers inside out and back to front, whilst feeling confident with the large amount of core content which the courses now contain.
Furthermore, I believe that developing students' critical thinking is essential to being able to access the curriculum properly. In English, this means building confidence with unseen texts, and understanding how to identify and analyse links across texts. In social sciences, it's crucial to understand how the case studies link together.
This approach helps students to stretch their ideas further in preparation for A-level and university. I'm very happy to organise more open-ended sessions for feedback and discussion for those learners who need stretching and challenging.
I graduated from Queen Mary, University of London with a first class degree in English and Film Studies, and later from UCL with a first in Social and Cultural Anthropology. My main tutoring focus is on English literature and language at GCSE and A-level, but I am also confident supporting in social sciences including anthropology, sociology and economics and related topics such as philosophy, geography, drama and general studies.
As well as academic subjects, I am able to provide support in practical audiovisual artistic work. I am an exhibiting video artist, and have previously shown my work at venues including the Photographers' Gallery, the Turner Contemporary, the Hundred Years Gallery, Espacio and 54 the Gallery.
