Passionate about instilling self-belief

I am one of Tutorfair’s original tutors. I was excited to have been present at the launch of the company, and I'm still very happily furnishing a portion of my client book through the organisation. I'm a huge fan of the Tutorfair values.

Over the past five years I have travelled around the world to tutor, although most of my long-term students are based in London. Over that period I have built up a wealth of experience. My time has been split between privately funded students, and students who need special attention for a wide variety of social and educational reasons, funded by the government. I have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering for the Tutorfair Foundation, teaching intervention classes in various London schools in the run up to GCSE science examinations.

My clientele spans royalty and geopolitical figureheads, Holywood actors, children at the school on my street, and students on free school meals. I have been exposed to a catalogue of challenges, many of which I could not have imagined at the start of my career. These challenges have had the effect of attuning my professional sensitivities and allowing me to grow into a widely experienced and highly effective tutor.

My students' results have routinely exceeded expectations, and my relationships with clients and students alike have been consistently praised.

After graduating in Politics, Philosophy and Economics in 2009, I spent six months in New York recording with my rock band. In late 2010 we relocated to London, where I took up a Manny-ing position alongside music. I surprised myself at how nourishing I found the experience of helping an 11-year-old boy with challenges he faced - from homework, to saxophone, to behavioural problems in the classroom and playground. After the success of what essentially became a mentoring role, a series of recommendations led to invitations to work with older teenagers, where I specialised in maths and the sciences.

I grew into a professional tutor as I discovered my passion for inspiring, and helping to equip teenagers with a mentality and motivation for out-achieving their own expectations. I now balance tutoring with an active music career, in which recent successes have included headline slots at UK music festivals and airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music.

My son learnt more in 10 hours with Alex that he did in his last four GCSE terms

Alex was employed by us as maths tutor to our 16 year old son, Cassius, during the recent Christmas
holidays. He came for 2 hours a day for five days and struck up an immediate connection with his pupil
who respected and liked him enormously. My son had been struggling with his maths for the last 2 years
having been consigned to the bottom GCSE set but after 10 hours with Alex he felt much more confident
and realised he wasn't so terrible at maths after all. He asserts that he learnt more with Alex than he did
in his last four gcse terms. In addition Alex was always punctual and polite and a pleasure to have in our
home.
I would definitely re-employ him.

Alex is great for bringing the spark and fun back into maths.

Alex has been tutoring my two children for a term. My 9 year old son was loosing confidence at school, was struggling his maths, and was in danger of switching off having been placed in the bottom maths group. Not wanting a switched off and demoralised child I hired Alex to help him start to build confidence and enjoy maths. At the end of this year’s exam he was top of the bottom group and was then asked to sit the higher set’s maths paper, in which he did very well, and has subsequently been moved up two maths sets. He will start next year academically willing and excited to carry on improving in maths, and I am convinced that he will.

Alex is great for bringing the spark and fun back into maths. With my kids, he is not a formal teacher. He arrives on his motorbike and plays guitar in a band. What more could a school weary 9 year old boy or 6 year old girl want? They are learning whilst having fun and I never have to drag them to a lesson or cope with moans.

I am very happy to recommend Alex and will continue to use his services to aid my children's learning and interest in maths.

I have no hesitation in recommending him wholeheartedly

Alex has tutored both my son (now 15) and daughter (now 17) on science subjects for the past 2 years. My wife and I have got to know him quite well during this time. He was recommended to us by one of their previous tutors.

Alex’s tutoring has helped our children tremendously. He is a very gifted teacher who was able to adapt his method to produce excellent results for both my children despite their very different styles and learning aptitude.

He is patient and generous with his time.

Finally, Alex is a well-rounded individual with a creative mind and a wide range of interests.
I consider him not only an excellent tutor but now also a family friend.

Far better grades than she was predicted in her mock examinations

Alex Lawry White tutored our daughter from February to June 2014. Alex did a fantastic job of supporting her in her studies for GCSE Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. We always found Alex to be punctual, polite and well prepared for all his tutoring sessions. He demonstrated a thorough understanding of all these subjects; while being able to communicate and tutor Lottie in a relaxed and engaging manner. Additionally, Alex taught Lottie a number of very helpful exam techniques that helped her to manage her time effectively across all of her chosen subjects. Alex’s commitment to supporting Lottie was also shown by his readiness to help her with any questions or problems (via text & email) outside of their structured tutoring sessions. Overall he was a great support.

All of this hard work resulted in Lottie securing far better grades than she was predicted in her “mock” examinations. We enjoyed having Alex in our home and would confidently recommend him as a first rate tutor to any parent or student.

We have used other tutors in the past and it is evident that Alex is in a class of his own

Ales Lawry-White tutored my daughter, Emma, for her Double Science GCSE written papers in the Easter Holidays, and the weeks of Summer Term, leading up to her exams.
Before Alex started, Emma was predicted to get a C in each of her papers. In the event, after Alex's sessions, Emma got an A in Physics, with an A* in her Chemistry and Biology papers.
Alex is obviously an extremely good tutor. We have used other tutors in the past and it is evident that he is in a class of his own.
Emma enjoyed her sessions with Alex and, most importantly, was able to approach the revision of other subjects in the knowledge that the Sciences "were sorted".
I would highly recommend Alex.

Tutoring for Y3, 4 & 7 - abroad

Alex travelled with us for two weeks during the summer 2014 to tutor our children Y3, Y4 and Y7 in maths and science. Not only was he an absolute pleasure to have on holiday with our family, engaging with us and the children but also respecting our boundaries and privacy, he connected to each of our very different children individually. He quickly assessed what they needed to focus on in the time he was with us and proceeded to engage each of them in inspired, carefully targeted learning in an environment that was certainly not conducive to kids concentrating! He had a range of different teaching techniques which he honed to each child, and inspired them to love learning, giving them confidence and a sound grounding in subjects in which they had previously struggled and disliked.

Thoroughly recommend Alex L - an excellent teacher.

Alex came to tutor our 17 year old as she had failed her maths iGCSE. He always arrived on time, he was efficient and most importantly he managed to teach maths in such a way that she enjoyed maths for the first time in her life. He rebuilt her lost confidence. Alex teaches in a way that teenagers get and makes a sometimes rather dry, subject fun.

Speaks to students like an individual.

My son clicked with Alex immediately. Because my son suffers with attention issues he has self-limiting beliefs, so it was amazing to hear how easily he communicated with Alex at the very first lesson. My son had a huge breakthrough within half an hour of spending time with Alex, and said he is one of the best teachers he has ever had.

All the help my daughter needed, at just the right time

My daughter was on the border between an A and an A* in Maths after her mock GCSEs and before we met Alex. She says that her time with Alex (14 hours) secured that A* grade; especially as she had no permanent teacher at school at that time. She really benefitted from his calm, low-key manner and felt able to ask him to go over things again and again until she got them. From my point of view, it was money very well spent and a great investment in her future.

Excellent Science tutor for common entrance

Alex is an excellent science tutor and was able to engage with our 13 year old son brilliantly for revision before his exam. Although we only found Alex quite late in the day, he nevertheless managed to very thoroughly go through the main physics, chemistry and biology syllabuses and make sure our son understood it all and knew it well.

A patient Tutor who explained things well

Alex was an excellent tutor, who was patient and understanding, both with my daughter and also his schedule and fitting in lessons as GCSE's became closer.
My daughter found that he explained maths concepts she hadn't understood in school very clearly, and without his help we are sure she wouldn't have achieved the grade she needed to progress into 6th form.

A Talented Tutor with a Very Nice Style

Alex Tutored our Daughter in advance of GCSE's. He was focused on Chemistry and did a little Physics.
He has excellent knowledge of the subjects and of the exam boards and GCSE requirements.
He is very good at explaining complex concepts and has a number of different angles on each item which really helps to get concepts across and helps with remembering key points.
We have already recommended him to other parents and students.

Quality Science and Maths Tutoring

Alex L tutored our daughter in the lead up to her IGCSE. We engaged him for Chemistry and Alex spent a number of sessions with her on Maths as well. Alex was able to use his experience and teaching skills to ensure she understood the content and apply this to exams. Whilst we considered our daughter highly skilled in this area, we realised in the final months that Chemistry and Maths were not reflecting the effort she was putting in. We would highly recommend Alex if you are looking for an excellent tutor.
