About Alex
After achieving straight A*s at A2-Level in four subjects, straight As at AS (the highest grades possible) in five subjects, and 9 A*s at GCSE including Maths, Science, Electronics and Latin, I went on to study Physics at the University of Oxford. There, I was awarded two Scholarships, worth £150 and £700 respectively, and graduated with 1st Class Honours.
I have 500+ hours of tutoring experience under my belt. Subjects I have taught include A-Level Maths, Physics and Chemisty, GCSE Mathematics and Sciences, and Oxbridge University admissions. Last year, an incredibly motivated student even had me teach University-level Mathematics prior to starting his degree! As well as at Oxford, I was awarded both a Senior Scholarship and a Mathematics Prize at St Paul's School. My Primary School was Colet Court. As such, I tutor for entrance examinations to all of the above, having been through the process myself.
Throughout my academic career, I don't believe my success has come from simple natural ability; I put in a lot of hard work and dedication to achieve a near-perfect record! This is perhaps why tutoring has always come naturally to me; I have been there, staring at a topic or problem as if I would never understand it, as if it were impossible... but when I see students in the same position, I know how to stoop down to their level, set them on the right trajectory toward mastery of the subject. It is an absolute pleasure to see students' eyes light up with that "aha" moment: that moment they realise they've acquired a deeper understanding and previously impossible problems become solvable.
I have been received well by every single student I've taught. I am patient, calm, and offer a balanced approach that combines tried and tested systems of teaching with a tailored, pragmatic approach based on the student. My ability to adapt to specific learning styles and preferences of every one of my pupils comes from teaching students of various backgrounds, including the UK, Hong Kong, Dubai and the United States.
Especially at early stages, I think a student has to be shown why a subject is interesting. Often times this interest is sparked by some outside motivation. As such, I think it is valuable to have a healthy range of interests and hobbies. In my personal life I am passionate about Gymnastics, and was Captain of the Oxford University Team. Other sports I thoroughly enjoy are Tennis, Squash, Horsemanship and Martial Arts. I love languages, and speak conversational French, and am currently teaching myself Japanese (including reading and writing). I am an avid Computer Programmer, knowing a number of programming languages, and have completed internships in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning as both a Computer Vision Engineer and a Data Scientist.
Thank you for your time, and hope to hear from you soon!
