About Alasdair
BA in History (1st Class Honours) – Oxford University (2010)
MA in Philosophy (Distinction, top mark in year) – King's College London (2013)
MLitt in Philosophy (Distinction) – St Andrew's (2017)
DPhil (=PhD) in Philosophy – Oxford University (2017–ongoing)
From 2010 to 2012 I tutored privately, taught English as a foreign language, and tutored in a primary school. From 2013-2016 I worked as a Commissioning Editor for Hurst Publishers, an independent academic publishing house in London. Since 2016 I've been back in academia, and I'm currently working towards a PhD in Philosophy at Oxford. I also currently work as a Tutor (giving tutorials) in Philosophy of Mind for Merton College, University of Oxford, and as a Teaching Assistant in Logic for Balliol College, University of Oxford.
Since 2010 I've tutored students in most humanities subjects, from primary school-level to undergraduate degree-level. My particular specialities are: Philosophy, including Logic (especially A-Level, IB, undergraduate); History (especially A-Level, IB, undergraduate); and preparation for admissions to universities (especially Oxford/Cambridge).
I find tutoring incredibly rewarding. One-on-one tuition allows the tutor and the student to collaborate much more closely than any classroom situation ever could. I enjoy watching my students get better at their subjects, and I especially enjoy watching their interest in their subjects grow as they gain mastery over them. I also enjoy taking the role of mentor when advising students on university applications. I have an excellent track record of both improving my students' grades and helping them to enjoy their subjects.
I'm happy to tutor in person in Oxford, or via video-link if you are based elsewhere.

Alasdair has worked very successfully with my son, tutoring in ‘A’ level English, Politics and Philosophy. He is an inspiring tutor who is always well prepared and adapts lessons well to meet individual learning needs.
Alasdair has also worked as tutor at Plaistow Primary School giving ten and eleven year old pupils one to one tuition. He has been very successful teaching small groups of children English in preparation for their SATs tests.Alasdair worked steadily throughout the four weeks of his course. He was attentive and coped well with the intensity of the workload.
In class, he had good authority and he was well prepared for lessons. His analytical mind and sound research pushed his lessons from strength to strength. The Pre-Intermdiate and Upper Intermediate students had trust in his understanding and explanation of the language points. He managed his classes with a range of effective techniques. This combined with his excellent plans pushed his lessons into a B Pass.
Overall, Alasdair was clear on staging and the rationale although there is still some fine-tuning needed around the language highlighting. He was reminded to reduce TTT,involve the students in the highlighting stage and to keep working on transferring this knowledge into manageable bite sized chunks.
Overall, he worked independently and he was a capable teacher with clear awareness of what to do with both skills and language lessons.
In TP feedback, he was perceptive and self -aware.
Alasdair will continue to build on his teaching skills and techniques and be a reliable and effective teacher.View more recommendations
