About Adolf

I am a dedicated Educational Consultant(Mathematics Educator) and a Motivational Speaker (DBS CHECKED) with over 1000 hours' experience in using effective learning styles to help students improve self confidence in primary, secondary and higher level mathematics. I have experience delivering lessons in person, through an online classroom and designing courses for home schooled children. Explaining maths in a simple and uncomplicated manner is what I am all about. I am an Associate Member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). I graduated from the University of Southampton with an honours degree in Mathematics and then from the University of Portsmouth with a Post Graduate in Mathematics education(FE) after having an exemplary career in the British Army. I also took an Engineering, Physics and Geophysics Foundation Year course at the University Of Southampton. Mathematics, as a subject is very important to me, as we all use it in our day-to-day lives to help us make simple and important decisions (i.e. from buying a pint of milk to buying a car) and that's what makes it a very important subject to learn. I am a full-time tutor. I am very polite, patient, friendly and I strongly believe that everyone can do maths with the right help. It is my passion to help students build their confidence and interest in maths. Having worked with gifted and talented children as well as those who have behavioural, emotional and social difficulties I have experience with all abilities and enjoy finding an approach which works for even the most challenging of students.

Lessons are conventionally and nicely delivered in person or online and being a car driver I am in a well-placed position to travel out to hard to reach places by public transport.

Why am I a full-time tutor?
As part of my Mathematics degree and post graduate education course, I undertook several school placements. I had the opportunity to teach students in two different ways. Of course, I taught students in the normal medium to large size classes, but I also tutored students individually and in small groups. I found that the approaches and skills needed in each of these two situations were very different.

I found that, overwhelmingly, individual and small group tutoring was more beneficial for the student, as well as being more enjoyable personally. As a result, I decided to become a professional tutor.
My experience, together with my qualifications, give me an expert subject knowledge which I have used to help many students reach their maximum potential in what can be a very challenging area.

I am experienced in helping students to overcome exam stress and other barriers to learning.

For special educational needs please ask - I would be delighted to discuss your situation and how I might be able to help.

In my spare time I enjoy travel and over the past few years have visited many exotic locations such as South America, South Africa, and West Africa. Finally, I am a sporty individual and I enjoy watching football and athletic games.

Learning Mathematics:
For a student to be successful in their study of maths, three factors are crucial. These are:
1) Knowledge (of facts and methods),
2) Understanding (of these facts and methods), and
3) Confidence (in using the knowledge and understanding).

If any one of these three is lacking, it is very hard to achieve success in maths. Learning maths consists of applying new ideas and processes to a variety of problems. Until a student's knowledge and understanding of the new ideas and processes reaches a good level, then they will struggle to answer problems correctly, which will in turn make the student less confident. And once confidence is lost, it is easy for the knowledge and understanding to regress.

My Approach To Tutoring:
My approach to tutoring, while being flexible enough to adapt to the needs of each individual, will normally focus on first making sure that a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding is in place, by discussing and attempting problems. Once knowledge and understanding start to build, the student finds more success in tackling problems. In this way, confidence grows and the student is moving along the path to success in maths.
I am experienced in helping students to overcome exam stress and other barriers to learning.

WHAT I WILL DO

I WILL:

1. Plan and execute lessons based on students needs and also based on information from school teachers.

2. Evaluate student performance and communicate results of the lessons to school teachers and parents

3. Maintain records of each tutoring session

4. Create and administer weekly quizzes and monthly tests to track student progress

5. Provide guidance to students to improve academic performance

6. Help students to prepare for tests.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

As part of my Mathematics degree and post graduate education course, I undertook several school placements. I had the opportunity to teach students in two different ways. Of course, I taught students in the normal medium to large size classes, but I also tutored students individually and in small groups. I found that the approaches and skills needed in each of these two situations were very different.

I found that, overwhelmingly, individual and small group tutoring was more beneficial for the student, as well as being more enjoyable personally. As a result, I decided to become a professional tutor.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Mathematics, as a subject is very important to me, as we all use it in our day-to-day lives to help us make simple and important decisions (i.e. from buying a pint of milk to buying a car) and that's what makes it a very important subject to teach/learn. Explaining maths in a simple and uncomplicated manner using real life examples and to connect every maths concept/topic to things we do in our everyday lives is what I enjoy about teaching.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My secondary school maths teacher is my role model and who inspired me a lot. I will say he is probably the reason why I chose mathematics. He made algebra/trigonometry really easy and understandable using real life examples. Examples like going to the carpentry shop and designing ladders using the idea of Pythagoras/trigonometry. It made maths more practical than just theoretical.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, you have to be patient, polite, approachable and be ready to make student feel comfortable asking any question without feeling embarrassed.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Students should always try to understand the concepts and not try to memorise every concept. I also had this rule in school "don't read maths, do maths". Meaning don't just look at a question and say you can do it without actually solving it with pen/paper
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Using online tools to create perfect worksheets/power points to illustrate/teach maths that will 100% feel like in person(face to face). But I am always investigating new apps/software and am making progress everyday.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

In my spare time I enjoy travel and over the past few years have visited many exotic locations such as South America, South Africa, and West Africa. I am also a sporty individual and I enjoy watching football and athletic games.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

My passion for the subject and my commitment to make sure my students succeed. Like allowing students to email me maths questions anytime the struggle with a question or they need a hint to solve a question.
