About Adam

GCSE 9-1 specialist. Qualified teacher + grammar experience

Hello and welcome to my tutorfair profile!

I am a qualified teacher and I worked at WCGS as a classroom teacher in the past. I currently teach for Lionheart Education and Homeschooltutoring during the day, and privately during the evenings.

My specialism is Edexcel GCSE Mathematics for the new specification (9-1), and my favourite academic years to teach are year 10, 11, 12, and 13. Having resigned from classroom teaching in July 2016, I now tutor mathematics full time because I have experienced the huge benefits that a little bit of extra help outside of school can make in maths for a students ability as well as confidence.

I have always enjoyed maths and logic puzzles and my experience teaching has allowed me to gain a strong familiarity with the content of the new GCSE specification and the topics and skills that will be assessed.

I believe the individualised education style is what makes tuition so effective so I try to adapt my style to the student that I have in front of me! The more information you can give me as to why you want tuition the better because then I can prepare appropriately.

I may be available for times that aren't listed, so please contact me if you would like a specific time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My style of tuition:

My style of tuition is very much based around personalised learning. I spend time finding out what areas of maths a certain student finds difficult through conversation, and use this to guide tuition together with a sense of purpose. Every student is different so it is so important to get to know their own individual strengths and weaknesses. I find that this purposeful and individualised approach to learning maths is effective and motivates students to improve and take responsibility for their mathematics progress. It also helps me to plan effective lessons.

I allow students responsibility for their own learning through homework. We decide how much is needed together, and what type of homework will be most helpful based on your individual circumstances and your end goal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What you can expect:

Parents can receive regular feedback to ensure everyone is kept in the loop. I can give initial assessment maths papers if these are wanted by student/parent. It allows us to quickly identify areas for improvement and helps to make lessons targeted and purposeful.

If you are a GCSE student, I can provide a free textbook and workbook for the new GCSE 9-1 curriculum as well as sample practice papers for the new curriculum exams to help provide structure.

I can tutor for Edexcel, AQA, OCR GCSE Mathematics, IGCSE, and the new A-level Mathematics specification.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new curriculum (9-1):

Problem solving and ratio are both a large part of the new specification so these are a strong focus for my lessons for year 7-11 students.

For year 7-9 students this means solving a lot of interesting maths problems rather than learning by rote - nrich.com is a great place to find suitable problems.

For year 10-11 students the best practice for the new 9-1 exams are the sample paper sets released by the exam board that their school uses alongside nrich problems and textbook/past paper questions from their exam board.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hobbies:

In my spare time I am a keen cricketer; captaining a friendly cricket team in South London and playing as a Batsman and reluctant bowler. I have coached children aged 11+ as well as adults for cricket, and although I have played competitively for teams in the Surrey County Fullers league and the Yorkshire and Derbyshire league in the past, I now prefer to only play friendlies for enjoyment!

I volunteer part-time for a charity called 7cups which provides help for anyone who finds themselves in a place in their life where they need some support.

I am a Padi qualified open water scuba diver and have spent time snorkeling with all sorts of exciting creatures such as whale-sharks in Mexico and Octopuses in Croatia. I absolutely love Kayaking on still waters, and swim recreationally.

I enjoy playing the Piano having had lessons for 8 years as a child - I never took graded exams because I learnt for the enjoyment of being able to play my favourite pieces! I always enjoyed making music with the piano intuitively and saw music theory as a chore so chose not to learn how to read music the conventional way. The result is that I still enjoy playing to this day.

If you'd like to discuss with me about what you are looking for or want to book me as a tutor do send me a message and I'll get back to you when I can!

Adam has just done two hours of tutoring on A Level stats for my daughter. He came well prepared and was able to cover the majority of the S1 module in that time and to explain the subject very clearly. My daughter now has a much better understanding and is feeling far more confident about the upcoming exam.

I was very impressed with Adam's approach to teaching: he had excellent preparation and was clearly very experienced in how to teach this subject. Equally if not more importantly, Adam has a real desire to get to know his pupils and adapt his teaching to them, which is invaluable. He was able to build a brilliant rapport with our daughter straight away.

A big thank you to a great teacher!

Grade 9 achieved

Written by Samuel N
I began tutoring with Adam for maths GCSE because of the new harder 9-1 syllabus. I wanted a grade 9 but did not think I could get it without some extra help.

I found our weekly lessons relevant to me because we made a personal plan based on what topics I found hardest in our first lesson. There were some gaps in my knowledge from school including set notation which is a new topic to 9-1 so that was really useful to find out. We practiced and discussed challenging grade 9 level problems from the topics I found hardest each week, and I was impressed by how flexible Adam was to take each lesson in a direction that was best for me, and spend time discussing strategies and methodology rather than just telling me the 'answer'.

I managed to achieve the grade 9 in maths so I am really pleased with the result from tuition. It will help me when applying to study medicine, because universities are likely to put more emphasis on GCSE's with the new A-level being taken at the end of year 13. Thank you to a hard working tutor for helping me get a 9

We met Adam when he came to help my daughter with preparing for her maths GCSE. Adam came to every lesson well prepared and ready to give it 100%. He is fun but gets the job done. Really a brilliant maths tutor! My daughter really struggles with maths, it was a huge challenge. Without Adams help and excellent teaching skills she would not have passed. We could not have been more thrilled that my daughter passed and grateful to Adam. He is now working with our 13 year old son. Not sure what we would do without him. Thanks so much Adam!
