GCSE 9-1 specialist. Qualified teacher + grammar experience

Now taking students for September 2017

From September 2017 I will be tutoring in the following places:

Mondays --> Willesden classes
Tuesdays --> 1 to 1 anywhere in London
Wednesdays --> Wimbledon classes
Thursdays --> Lewisham & Forest Hill classes
Fridays --> 1 to 1 anywhere in London

There is a maximum size of 5 students for the classes to make sure there is enough individual attention for each student. If you are studying for A-level I can provide 1 to 1 tuition during the daytime.

My rate for the classes is 39 per class, and my 1 to 1 rate is 74 per lesson + travel. You can read more about me below or send me a message straight away if you are interested in having me as your maths tutor!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About me:

As a qualified teacher I have worked in one of the highest achieving grammar schools in England, specialising in Edexcel GCSE Mathematics for the new specification. Having resigned from classroom teaching in July 2016, I now tutor mathematics full time because I have experienced the huge benefits that a little bit of extra help outside of school can make in maths.

I have always loved maths and my experience teaching has allowed me to gain a strong familiarity with the content of the new GCSE specification and the topics and skills that will be assessed.

I may be available for times that aren't listed, so please contact me if you would like a specific time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My style of tuition:

My style of tuition is very much based around personalised learning. I spend time finding out what areas of maths a certain student finds difficult through conversation, and use this to guide tuition together with a sense of purpose. Every student is different so it is so important to get to know their own individual strengths and weaknesses. I find that this purposeful and individualised approach to learning maths is effective and motivates students to improve and take responsibility for their mathematics progress. It also helps me to plan effective lessons.

I allow students responsibility for their own learning through homework. We decide how much is needed together, and what type of homework will be most helpful based on your individual circumstances and your end goal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What you can expect:

Parents will receive regular feedback to ensure everyone is kept in the loop. I can give initial assessment maths papers if these are wanted by student/parent. It allows us to quickly identify areas for improvement and helps to make lessons targeted and purposeful.

If you are a GCSE student, I will provide a free textbook and workbook for the new GCSE 9-1 curriculum as well as sample practice papers for the new curriculum exams to help provide structure.

I can tutor for Edexcel, AQA, OCR GCSE Mathematics, IGCSE, A-level Mathematics (C1, C2, C3, C4, and S1), and for 11+ admissions tests. I am available for additional last-minute video-chat support during exam periods.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new curriculum (9-1):

Problem solving and ratio are both a large part of the new specification so these are a strong focus for my lessons for year 7-11 students.

For year 7-9 students this means solving a lot of interesting maths problems rather than learning by rote - nrich.com is a great place to find suitable problems.

For year 10-11 students the best practice for the new 9-1 exams are the sample paper sets released by the exam board that their school uses alongside nrich problems and textbook/past paper questions from their exam board.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hobbies:

In my spare time I am a keen cricketer; captaining a friendly cricket team in South London and playing as a Batsman and reluctant bowler. I have coached children aged 11+ as well as adults for cricket, and although I have played competitively for teams in the Surrey County Fullers league and the Yorkshire and Derbyshire league in the past, I now prefer to only play friendlies for enjoyment!

I am a Padi qualified open water scuba diver and have spent time snorkeling with all sorts of exciting creatures such as whale-sharks in Mexico and Octopuses in Croatia. I enjoy Kayaking on still waters, and swim recreationally.

I can play the Piano having had lessons for 8 years as a child - I never took graded exams because I learnt for the enjoyment of being able to play my favourite pieces! I always enjoyed making music with the piano intuitively and saw music theory as a chore so chose not to learn how to read music the conventional way. The result is that I still enjoy playing to this day!

If you'd like to discuss with me about what you are looking for or want to book me as a tutor do send me a message and I'll get back to you when I can.

Adam has been tutoring my daughter in Year 8. He brings not only his genuine interest and enthusiasm to maths, but teaches with patience, whilst keeping the lesson fun and interesting.
I have already seen her ability , as well as her confidence grow, which is so key to this subject.

Good tutor

Adam has just done two hours of tutoring on A Level stats for my daughter. He came well prepared and was able to cover the majority of the S1 module in that time and to explain the subject very clearly. My daughter now has a much better understanding and is feeling far more confident about the upcoming exam.

a highly skilled teacher!

I was very impressed with Adam's approach to teaching: he had excellent preparation and was clearly very experienced in how to teach this subject. Equally if not more importantly, Adam has a real desire to get to know his pupils and adapt his teaching to them, which is invaluable. He was able to build a brilliant rapport with our daughter straight away.

A big thank you to a great teacher!
