About Abid
As a Mechatronics and Robotic Systems Graduate currently pursuing a part-time Masters in Robotics, I have worked with students from all different sectors and have worked hard to empower their education.
I’m looking to tutor computer science, maths, physics, electronics or robotics. As part of my studies, I have acquired the underlying knowledge behind electrical, mechanical as well as robotic systems. Currently, in my masters, I have used my skills to predict housing prices in California from a range of input data, determine 3D orientation of objects using neural networks as well as create a Robotic Minesweeper using ROS. In addition, I have gained skills in low-level image processing, recognition, and motion analysis as well as modelling, simulating and controlling robots with mechanisms for generating intelligent behaviour all using MATLAB and Python. Undergraduate projects included the creation of an Industrial Temperature Controller and an investigation on how Internet delay can affect robotic systems - using a robotic arm to reproduce the pressure felt to a haptic device via ROS, Python and Linux. In terms of other programming experience, I utilised C to deliver a computer-based system that handled a large part of an airway company’s booking process, ultimately being awarded a first.
As Vice President of the Coding Robotics Society, I helped members understand C++ and Python to develop an autonomous vehicle. My duties involved organising challenges and building a team of coders to take part in competitions. In addition, I was the academic director of the Professional Development Project at University where I have liaised with TeachFirst, Jaguar Land Rover and PwC to provide transferable skills to students by organising workshops on public speaking, leadership, teamwork and communication. Moreover, I have been involved in speaking at various organisations to inspire future generations to pursue a career in STEM-related areas – targeting crowds of over 100 attendees.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have been involved in a lot of volunteering activities, teaching and mentoring students from a wide variety of backgrounds. As a maths tutor at Lawrence Sheriff School in Rugby, I was involved in tutoring two students who were struggling to understand the basic concepts in maths. Due to my involvement, I was able to move them from the lowest set to the highest set, whilst igniting a passion for the subject. One of my students was awarded ‘the best-improved student’ award at the end of the year. In addition, I was involved in organising a science club at Northlands Primary School, Rugby where I had to come up with a detailed plan on what experiments, the students would be interested in and what was safe. I had to motivate and impress them with the knowledge and give them a sense of awe at the different experiments. At the start, we had around three students attending the science club, so I had the idea of showing 1 experiment a day, after the last school lesson to different classes from years 1 to 5. The students were ecstatic and the attendees for the club increased exponentially every week until we had more than 40 attendees per week. Furthermore, I was involved in a massive program with special-needs students at Brooke School, Rugby where I taught them the fundamentals of physics and conducted experiments with them.
Currently, teaching children from the ages of four to fifteen at Explore Learning is fine tuning my ability to explain difficult concepts with varying degrees of comprehension while helping me appreciate the virtue of patience. I’m involved in writing personal feedback to each and every child in my zone after their session. I work with the students to improve on these feedbacks on a one to one session until they’re able to comprehend the concepts.
As you can see from my experiences, I’m really passionate about empowering our young generation and motivating them to pursue their dream career. I have been blessed to have amazing teachers who inspired me to pursue my career and I wish to do the same for someone else.

I use a student-centred teaching methodology whereby I motivate the students to work out the answers themselves rather than spoon-feeding them with information. I believe that this increases creativity as well as help them tackle similar unknown questions. The biggest hurdle for students is learning how to tackle complicated questions based on what they already know. In my method, I break the problem down into small digestible bits which are easier to comprehend. If these bits are still difficult, they're broken down into further smaller bits. Then we tackle each bit, one by one until we get to the top of the pyramid. The important aspect throughout the entire process is to encourage and use positivity to inspire the student with a particular focus on developing a passion for the subject.

I’ve known Abid Abdul Gafoor for almost 5 years and can attest to his strength of character and responsibility. He worked incredibly hard on his Robotics Degree,
sacrificing his personal life to achieve his goal. As a close friend and tutee of his, he has taught me the fundamentals of maths and has directly contributed to me understanding and achieving good results at University. During the time, I have known him, he’s been an actively contributing member of the community where he has previously volunteered in various schools and has done talks helping empower students to pursue their ideal career. Hence, I think he will be perfect for his role as a tutor.View more recommendations
