Powerboat (Baking Soda)

February 24, 2016 Frank I

Simple demonstration of acid/carbonate chemistry AND Newton's third law for all ages.

-run a bath for the boat

-puncture a hole in the non-lid end of an empty bottle of water and tape around the edges to make it air tight

-pour a bit of household vinegar into the bottle

-wrap some baking powder in ktichen roll

-place the powder/roll through the lid opening close the lid and tip the bottle to combine the powder with the vinegar

-place your powered boat onto the bath water and watch it move

-the acid neutralizes the carbonate, creating carbon dioxide gas that rushes out of the straw and propels the boat using Newton's third law!  You could even work a discussion of buoyancy into the mix.
