Gender in Russian

February 11, 2016

In Russian language there is gender (masculine, feminine or neuter). It can be quite confusing but “a cat” is not “it” in Russia. It is either “he” - cat – кот (kot) (boy) or “she” – cat – кошка (kOshka) (girl). There is the same situation with dogs: “he” – пёс (pyos) or “she” – собака (sabAka). There are diminutive forms as well, (kitty – котИк, кОшечка, doggy – пЁсик, собАчка).
