About AQA

AQA A level Physics is an advanced course designed for students who have a passion for the subject and want to study it at a higher level. Offered by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), a UK-based examination board, the course delves into a wide range of topics such as mechanics, waves, electricity and magnetism, thermal physics and atomic and nuclear physics.

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of fundamental physical principles and learn how to apply them to solve problems.  Upon completion of the course, students will be well-prepared for further studies in physics or related fields, or for careers in science and technology.

AQA Physics Unit 5 (Old Specification)

The old specification of AQA physics A level unit 5 had two sections:

  • First part: This part of section A "Nuclear and Thermal Physics" included the characteristics of the nucleus, the properties of unstable nuclei, and the way energy is obtained from the nucleus.
  • Second part: This part of section A included the thermal properties of materials, properties and nature of gases.

The section B of the old specification allowed the students to study one of the following optional topics:

  • 2A – Astrophysics
  • 2B – Medical Physics
  • 2C – Applied Physics
  • 2D – Turning Points in Physics

In this resource, you will find AQA A level physics "Nuclear and thermal physics" past papers and mark schemes according to the old specification. This specification was discontinued from 2016 onwards.

Please note that this qualification has been updated and you can find past papers and mark schemes of this qualification according to the new specifications here in our another blog:

AQA Physics A-level Specimen Papers and Mark Schemes

The ‘old specification’ past papers and mark schemes in the next section can provide good question practice, but you should check whether the questions are covering content that is relevant to the current specification or not.
