Analyzing Poem in GCSE, A Level and IB Exams

In UK and International schools, students have to study and analyze poems in their English Literature class. The GCSE and IGCSE exam boards provide a collection of poems (anthologies) for students to study.

In the exam, students will have to analyze at least one of these poems, and some boards also require them to analyze an unseen poem.

This means that students cannot just remember information about the poem, rather they have to show how well they can analyze it. Moreover, students who are studying IB English Literature or A-level English Literature will also have to analyze poetry.

Context of the Poem "Hawk Roosting"

Ted Hughes wrote many poems about nature and animals until he died in 1984. He wrote a poem about a hawk, but he said it was not about being cruel to animals. He just wanted to show how the hawk thinks. Hughes loved animals since he was young and wrote many poems about the beauty and violence in nature. He thought animals were like people because they both have to fight to survive and succeed.

Ted Hughes represents the Hawk as a metaphor for 'Power'; a 'Creator' and a 'Destroyer'. The given Resource shall be found very useful for A-Level students, as well as for GCSE, AQA and IB
