About AQA/WJEC Poetry

AQA and WJEC are two examination boards in the United Kingdom that offer qualifications in English literature. Both boards include poetry as a key part of their syllabus, and students are required to study a range of poems from different periods and genres.

AQA Poetry Syllabus

AQA's poetry syllabus covers a wide range of poets and themes, including love and relationships, power and conflict, and identity. Some of the poets featured in the AQA syllabus include William Shakespeare, John Keats, Christina Rossetti, and Carol Ann Duffy.

AQA Poetry Anthology

AQA's poetry anthology is titled "Poems Past and Present" and contains a selection of 18 poems from different time periods and genres. The anthology is divided into two sections: "Love and Relationships" and "Power and Conflict". Some of the poems included in the anthology are:

  • William Shakespeare's Sonnet 116
  • John Keats' "La Belle Dame Sans Merci"
  • Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess"
  • Carol Ann Duffy's "War Photographer"
  • Simon Armitage's "Remains"

WJEC Poetry Syllabus

WJEC's poetry syllabus also covers a range of poets and themes, including war and conflict, nature, and the human condition. Some of the poets featured in the WJEC syllabus include Wilfred Owen, Seamus Heaney, William Wordsworth, and Robert Frost.

WJEC Poetry Anthology

WJEC's poetry anthology is titled "Poetry and Prose: 1800-1945" and contains a selection of 15 poems and extracts from longer works. The anthology covers a range of themes and genres, including war and conflict, nature, and the human condition. Some of the poems and extracts included in the anthology are:

  • William Wordsworth's "The Prelude" (extract)
  • Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ozymandias"
  • Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est"
  • Seamus Heaney's "Death of a Naturalist"
  • Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken"

In both the AQA and WJEC exams, students are typically required to write essays on a selection of poems, analyzing the language, structure, and themes of the poetry, as well as making comparisons between different poems.
