Connect with tutors offering Primary, KS3, GCSE, A-Level, and Degree level maths support

Maths is a subject that most students in Liverpool will get used to as they'll have to study it through primary school until they finish their maths GCSE. Mathematics is taught in schools across Merseyside and around England as part of the national curriculum through key stages 1, 2, 3, and 4 so most students will probably see more of it than they'd like.

Whether you love maths or hate it, you have to spend years studying it so let's see why it's so important that you study it, the challenges students will face, what areas of maths are studied at school and GCSE, in particular, and how private maths tutoring can help both struggling and gifted students get the most out of the subject.

Why It's Important to Study Maths

The first and most pragmatic reason for focusing on your maths studies is because you have to. As we mentioned, maths is a compulsory subject in primary and secondary school so even if you hate it, you're going to have to just deal with the fact that you can't get avoid mathematics. Similarly, it's a subject that you have to do at GCSE and many employers ask for GCSEs in maths and English.

There are also other benefits to learning more about maths. Maths can help you get better at telling the time, managing your finances, solving problems, and even cooking, since you need to know a thing or two about measures, ratios, and time.

Maths can also be beneficial in terms of work and those looking to work in banking and finance, business consulting and management, construction and engineering, IT and computing, pharmaceutics, or teaching and research could benefit from a solid knowledge of maths.

The salary for those with a BSc in Mathematics isn't bad, either, with the average graduate taking home £35k a year. Of course, the average is a bit lower for graduates with little experience, but the earning potential is there.

Why do so Many Students Struggle with Maths?

If it was that easy, everyone would have a degree in mathematics and be working in these high-paying fields. For many students at primary school, secondary school, and university, mathematics is a struggle and a challenging subject at every level.

In a subject like English literature, if you don't like a certain book, poem, or anthology, you know that next week, term, or year, you mightn't ever have to study it again. Maths, however, is a cumulative subject, which means that you build upon the knowledge you already have to advance in the subject.

This also means that if a student struggles one year of maths at school, it's very likely that you'll also struggle the following year, a problem that could be with them for years if not dealt with.

Students need to establish a solid understanding of the mathematics they're being taught before they can move onto another level and the teaching at our schools doesn't usually allow teachers to tailor their classes to every individual student and what they need to learn. Of course, this isn't the fault of the teachers, but rather an almost unavoidable problem that comes from teaching as many students as possible with as few teachers as possible.

A private maths tutor, on the other hand, could help, but more on that later...

Areas of Maths Studied at School

For students that hate mathematics, a maths GCSE is probably a double-edged sword. For one, it may be the last time they ever have to study the subject, but on the other hand, it's the most advanced maths they'll ever have to learn.

Of course, that doesn't mean that you stop using maths the second you finish your GCSE, but this is the last time you're obliged to use it in a formal academic setting.

Let's see what secondary school students will study on a maths GCSE. There are several different exam boards and we've taken the AQA papers as an example so make sure to check the specifics of your exam board if you're not sitting the AQA exams.

Students studying maths at GCSE will learn about numbers in general including whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, approximation, ratios, and finance.

They'll also see quite a bit of algebra with algebraic expressions, formulae, linear equations, simultaneous equations, quadratic equations, graphs, and sequences.

The GCSE also includes quite a bit on geometry including angles, lines, polygons, 2- and 3-dimensional shapes, Pythagoras' theorem, trigonometry, and vectors.

There's also a good amount of mathematical problem solving as well as statistics and collecting, representing, and analysing data.

A maths GCSE should give students a good foundation in maths even if they don't take their mathematics education any further.

Private One to One Maths Sessions

Whether you're really good at a subject or need to improve your level, private tutors are a great option. As we mentioned, maths is about building on your knowledge of the subject and gaining experience, which can be hard to do if you lack the prerequisite knowledge. Students that struggle in their maths lessons will find it increasingly difficult to catch up, especially if the teaching offered isn't tailored to them, what they know, and what they need to learn.

A qualified private tutor can adapt every session to the students level and experience with maths and make sure that they're learning at a pace that's right for them whether they're at primary school, secondary school, or university.

The help that a tutor offers is often tailored to the student, ensuring that every minute is spent learning as effectively as possible. Tutoring also allows shy children to be more involved in their lessons as they might be too embarrassed to ask for help from their teacher, especially in subjects they struggle with.

A maths tutor can also help gifted students by teaching them at a higher level than is available at their local school. Home tutoring is an opportunity for the best and brightest students to improve their grades at school or university by studying more about maths at home.

Finding a Maths Tutor
