Learn to play the violin from the comfort of your own home

The violin, which is sometimes called a fiddle, is one of those instruments that features heavily in classical music as well as in folk music. The violin is an evolution of earlier stringed instruments like the Lyre, which was plucked, and bowed instruments from Central Asian nomadic equestrian cultures who could use the hair from their horses for bows.

The Arabic rebab and then the Byzantine lyra would both inform the shape and sound of the modern violin. The earliest violins were found in Northern Italy in the 16th century and were probably "violino" or "vyollon". The French nobility just loved it and many powerful people were demanding that violins be made and played for them.

Generally, you play the violin with a bow and while the experts can certainly make it look easy, you'll soon see that playing the violin is harder than it looks and can take years of intense study to master.

Challenges in Learning to Play the Violin

The violin can be a tricky instrument to play and even after several lessons with a music teacher, you may still be struggling to play single notes well or wrap your head around basic music theory.

For one, just making a good sound on a violin is tricky. If you press a single key on a piano, you'll get a nice note that's in tune (as long as the piano itself is in tune), but when you first try to bow a violin, you'll probably be far from making the beautiful sound that a professional violinist would make.

Once you've managed to make a nice sound out of bowing your violin, you then need to think about playing other notes. Unlike a guitar, which has frets (little bars) across the neck to make specific notes when tuned, a violin has no real indication of where you can put your hands on the neck and you just need to learn exactly where each note is played.

That said, with a bit of practice and experience, you can learn exactly where to place your hands. There are some tricks students use before they know the exact positioning of their fingers such as putting tape or correcting fluid to show them exactly where their fingers should go.

The Advantages of Studying Violin

As you can see, playing the violin isn't necessarily easy, which makes teaching yourself how to play the instrument much more difficult. It's generally advised that students learn with the help of a teacher or tutor either in classes, private tutorials, or online. While it is possible to become a violinist on your own, it's certainly not recommended, especially when you consider that most other violin players will be classically taught and have a profound knowledge of both the instrument and music theory.

Music theory is probably one of the most important parts of learning to play the violin as you'll need an understanding of which notes to play and how to read musical notation and sheet music. A violinist will often play in orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and quartets so it's important that they understand music theory to help them communicate and play with other musicians.

We also mentioned how tricky violin technique can be. You'll make much better progress by learning this technique through lessons or with tutors as you'll have someone there to help you with your playing right from the very start. Picking up bad habits and techniques can scupper your progress further down the line.

Private Violin Tuition

One of the best ways to learn how to play the violin is with private violin lessons from a music teacher or tutor. Musical instruments are best learnt in private lessons as having several students all in the same lesson trying to practise something they've just learnt on their violin can be distracting and difficult for the teacher to correct.

The advantage or tutors over teachers is that the tutors work for you rather than a school. This means they can teach you what you want to learn rather than the same thing they teach all the other students following the course or lessons. This also means that they can adapt the work and classes to you, your preferred learning style, and your level.

While certain aspects of music theory are unavoidable, you mightn't be interested in playing classical violin and really want to learn more about folk music. With a tutor, you can do this. Just make sure you go with a tutor who specialises in playing folk or popular music rather than classical music.

Finding an Online Private Violin Tutor

If you've decided you'd like lessons from private tutors, just search for them on Superprof. While many people don't tend to think about it, you can get lessons online from professional violin teachers and in some ways, they can be just as effective as a lesson with the tutor there in the room with you.

As your teacher will be online, they don't have to travel to you. This means that online tutors tend to charge less for their teaching than face-to-face violin tutors. These aren't prerecorded video tutorials, either, there's a real tutor there to teach you the violin live via a webcam. As long as you have a decent webcam, microphone, and internet connection, you can learn how to play any musical instrument from the violin to the piano with an online tutor.

Many of the tutors on Superprof offer the first lesson for free, which is a great way to try out several classes before choosing the private tutor that's right for you and how you like to learn. It's important that you get along with your tutor, especially if you're a beginner as you'll need to remain motivated throughout your lessons and working with teachers you don't like won't help.

View each tutor's profile and compare their education, experience, and reviews with those of other tutors on the website. Once you've found some violin teachers that look like they'd be right for you, you can start getting in touch with them.
