Finding the Perfect Nutrition Tutor Online

The world of nutrition and food science is a pretty broad one, but since you are what you eat, learning about your food and nutrition can be pretty important. Whether you want to learn more about food for your own health, to study nutrition at school or university, or work in sports coaching, there are plenty of good reasons to study it.

Let's see why you should study nutrition, the challenges you'll face when you do, what you can learn about food and nutrition in school, and how private tutoring can help teach students more about food science and nutrition.

Why You Should Study Nutrition

Nutrition is the study of food, what's in it, and how it can affect our health. There are plenty of reasons to learn about it ranging from personal reasons to professional reasons.

You can study nutrition for yourself as it never hurts to know more about what's in your food and how your diet can improve your health and your life. Of course, if your interest in nutrition is purely personal, you may just want to learn about it in school at GCSE or privately with a tutor rather than commit several years of university study to the subject.

Of course, nutrition is also an interesting subject that can lead to a lot of career opportunities. You could study nutrition in order to become a nutritionist. Generally, nutritionists will work in hospitals, clinics, gyms, schools and universities, or healthcare facilities. However, it should be noted that there's a difference between dietitians and nutritionists and while each works with people to improve their diet, a dietitian tends to work with healthy people to promote better eating habits, a dietitian is somebody who treats medical conditions through diet.

Challenges in Nutrition

While becoming a nutritionist is certainly a noble profession, it's not a profession that's protected by law. Whilst dietitians are required to have specific qualifications to call themselves such, nutritionists have no such legal requirement which means there are some bad actors out there sullying the name of professional and ethical nutritionists.

Fortunately, nutritionists looking to practise as reputable professionals can register themselves on the UKVRN (UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists). Those who complete courses accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN) can place themselves on the UKVRN. It's a good idea to make sure you're on this as those who aren't mightn't have been able to meet the standards and competencies outlined by the AfN.

Areas of Nutrition Studied at School

The first lessons where students will have an opportunity to learn about food and nutrition will be in science and biology, in particular. Of course, if you wish to specialise in nutrition or dietetics, you might want to consider a GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition.

This course focuses on food, nutrition, and health, food science, food safety, food choice, and food provenance, making it useful for anyone wanting to move into a career that involves food such as sports coaching, cooking and cuisine, nutrition, or dietetics.

We've taken the AQA GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition so if you choose to study with another exam board, there may be some minor differences.

Food preparation involves learning about general practical skills, knife skills, preparing fruit and vegetables, using a cooker, and a wide variety of different cooking methods. They'll also learn about the science behind cooking food, how to prepare it safely, and where food comes from.

Students will also learn about nutrients like proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, water, and how to make informed choices for a balanced and varied diet.

Private Tuition in Nutrition

For those who'd like to learn more about nutrition and the food you eat, private tutors are an excellent option. With private tutoring, the lessons will be tailored to you, what you want to learn, and how you like to learn.

If you're studying nutrition at university, for example, your private tutor can help you outside of class with a view to improving your overall grades. This means that they can go back over what you've been learning in your university classes, help you with revision, or provide you with the academic support that your regular teachers or lecturers may not be able to provide.

Those interested in a better diet can also hire nutrition tutors just to learn how to eat more healthy food and the best diet for them. Again, remember that a nutritionist promotes healthier eating and if you have any medical conditions, you need to speak to your doctor or a dietitian.

More often than not, tutors will either work with just one student or a small group of students. This means they can better tailor their teaching to the class, allowing students to learn more effectively. This can be especially useful to students who don't respond well to the type of education offered in schools and universities with classrooms or lecture halls filled with students.
