Learn to speak Latin with the help of a private tutor

For antic authors like Seneca, Horace or Plautus, speaking no longer holds any secrets, and perhaps even for you. This dead language, which is very much alive, whether in Latin grammar or syntax.

Want to dive into the heart of the ancestral history of Latin, its etymological roots? If you like the beauty of and mystery of Latin words, or if you are a student of classical literature, taking Latin classes can awaken unconditional love in you. Even better, Latin can be considered among the ancient languages, provided it is regularly used. And for this reason, Manchester is the ideal place: once called Mamucium, it was an essential trading place in the Roman Empire.

Mamucium was established around 79BCE near a crossing point on the River Medlock. The fort was sited on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell in a naturally defensible position. It was erected as a series of fortifications established by Gnaeus Julius Agricola during his campaign against the Brigantes who were the Celtic tribe in control of most of what would become northern England. It guards the Deva Victrix (Chester) to Eboracum (York) Roman road running east to west, and a road heading north to Bremetennacum (Ribchester). The neighbouring forts were Castleshaw and Northwich.

Taking Latin courses in Manchester is therefore relatively easy! If Manchester was, in the time of ancient Rome, an important place of the Roman Empire, there are still many vestiges of it today, which students of social sciences and modern languages enjoy discovering.

If learning a Latin adage or expression can fascinate you, then we can only advise you to take Latin courses in Manchester, and let yourself be intoxicated by the Latin charm of its different districts and tourist monuments!

Learn Latin In Manchester

Step inside the 2,000-year-old Roman fortress where Manchester began. See restored ramparts, an ancient garden and excavated foundation.

Explore the ruins and restored structures of Castlefield Roman Fort. This historic structure was built to guard two strategically important roads and to keep the native population in line. Today it offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's history.

Start your visit with a walk into the restored Roman garden that leads up to the fortress. The parcel includes plants grown in Britain during Roman. These plants include ivy, roses and periwinkle. Adjacent to the garden is the foundations of a vicus, a small village that grew up by the fort to supply soldiers with food and entertainment.

As you approach the North Gate, take note of the series of defensive ditches. These have been partially renovated and would probably have included obstacles to make enemy assaults more difficult. Stand in front of the reconstructed gate that was built on the excavated grounds of the original. Archaeologists believe this is how the gate would have appeared in A.D. 200. You can still see the initial stones on the left.

Pass through the gate and look to your right to see the reconstructed foundations of the granary where grain would have been stored. You can even climb the restored West Wall and ramparts.

The fort was built in A.D. 79 and was called "Mamucium," the origin of the city’s name. This is the birthplace of Manchester and the fort’s remains are the earliest example of human settlement in the area. After the Romans abandoned the complex in 410, it was left to decay. During the Middle Ages the decrepit structure was known as “The Castle in the Field” and later shortened to Castlefield.

The fort complex is situated in Castlefield, a conservation area that’s been designated Britain’s first Urban Heritage Park. Take a stroll and discover other relics to Manchester’s past such as canal systems and railway viaducts. Many of the old industrial buildings have been refurbished and are now apartments, bars and restaurants.

Castlefield Roman Fort is on the southwest side of the city centre and is easy to get to on foot and by train, tram, bus and car. There is no entry fee.

This incredible setting could be where you learn Latin. To discover all aspects of Latin, in terms of phonetics, grammatical expression and rhetoric, you need to be properly equipped with reliable resources. For example, buy an English-Latin lexicon, a Latin vocabulary book, and an English Latin dictionary for your beginnings.

Go to your local bookshop, even better, to one of Manchester’s most emblematic booksellers, EJ Morton, Chorlton Bookshop or Paramount Books! You will find ancient texts, literary texts, everything you need to learn a language like Latin.

Study Latin In Manchester

If you wish to take your Latin studies to the next level you could always choose to start a BA in Classis at the University of Manchester.

Combine the study of Greek and Latin language, literature and culture with the examination of Greek and Roman political, social and intellectual history. Study Latin and/or Greek, starting from beginner, intermediate or advanced level. Use your skills to study ancient sources in their original languages and study at a top 10 UK university for Arts and Humanities (QS World University Rankings 2018).

Where appropriate, the texts for literary and historical course units are studied in the original language.

At the University of Manchester you will study with us and you'll have access to exclusive resources such as the Special Collections of The John Rylands Library (home to papyri, medieval manuscripts and early printed books including very early copies of the Homeric poems) and the Manchester Museum (the University's own on-campus holdings), with its world-class Egyptology collections.

You'll be taught by experts in the core aspects of Greek and Roman language, literature, culture and history. You will be able to choose from course units covering topics such as Latin love poetry, Greek myth, ancient epic and the literature of exile. Optional units are also available in a wide range of topics in Ancient History and Archaeology and in areas as diverse as Greek philosophy and Egyptology.

You could alternatively choose to join the Manchester Metropolitan University to study for a BA of Ancient and Medieval History.

These two chapters of the world’s history cover a vast span of humanity’s development – from the rise and fall of great empires to the birth of ideas that continue to shape our lives today. But more importantly, Latin was the primary language for all written texts during that period.

Study Ancient and Medieval History with the Manchester Metropolitan University and you’ll act as a witness to some of the world’s most fascinating – and turbulent – times. You’ll explore the history of Greece and Rome in Classical Antiquity, from around 600 BCE to 700 CE and see how it developed into the Medieval period, from around 700 CE onto 1500 CE.

Your study of Ancient History will be vital, as the era’s politics, events and development shape the way we think about many aspects of historical societies – and even our own culture. In your study of the Medieval period, you’ll discover a world transformed from its archaic predecessor with huge technological innovation and social change.

A lot of which happened thanks to the Roman and their language, Latin. Along the way, you’ll learn about war and empire, society and religion – analysing events, interpreting sources and developing an understanding of the transitions and trends that have shaped our world.
