Finding the Perfect Chemistry Tutor in Edinburgh

Chemistry looks at how atoms and molecules behave and is the study of everything in the universe. Much like physics and biology, chemistry is studied as one of the main hard sciences in schools in Edinburgh and Scotland so students should be quite familiar with the subject by the time they're finished compulsory education, especially if they're looking to continue studying chemistry at university.

If you want to do well in secondary school, you'll need to do well at chemistry but you'll need to be especially good at it if you're looking to do a degree at university and move onto a career in the sciences, especially in the fields that use chemistry as their foundation.

Let's have a look at why you should study chemistry, the challenges students need to overcome, what you should learn about chemistry at school, and how to find chemistry tutors in Edinburgh if you decide you'd like some extra chemistry tuition to help improve your level in the subject.

Why You Should Study Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of everything single atom in the universe and how they behave. It forms a great foundation for other related sciences as well as hard sciences in general. Your chemistry classes will probably be the first place you start seeing the scientific method in action and also where you'll do some of the most memorable experiments. Due to safety, you don't get to do too many of the really fun experiments in primary school but by secondary school, you get to start seeing chemistry in action.

Chemistry, as one of the core sciences, probably has the most appeal on account of how entertaining the experiments are. Generally, chemistry lessons tend to have a bit more panache to them than the other sciences. There are few lessons where you get to set things on fire, blow stuff up, create powerful puffs of smoke, etc.! While the experiments are fun, they're also a great experience and useful for teaching students about science in a fun and engaging way.

That's not to say the other sciences like biology and physics or the humanities aren't interesting, it's just that chemistry is way more appealing on the surface than some of these subjects and if that sparks your interest, you should go for it. Few other subjects can teach you something and be as entertaining as chemistry.

Chemistry can also teach students a lot about other sciences and not just physics and biology. If you want to study botany, geology, ecology, pharmacology, or forensics, a firm foundation in chemistry is a must. You'll probably need a good understanding of physics and biology for them, too. There's also some mathematics involved, too, so as you study chemistry, you'll also get a bit better at maths.

To be fair, the most important reason to study chemistry is that you have to and it's part of the curriculum. If you want to do well at school, you have to do well in all the subjects taught at primary and secondary school and chemistry is one of them!

Difficulties when Studying Chemistry

Chemistry can be fun but it's not always an easy subject to study. To get the most out of entertaining experiments, you need to understand what you're trying to learn from them and that means that it isn't all fun and games. These drier lessons can turn students off the subject so you need to be aware that you need to take the rough with the smooth.

It can be expensive for schools to provide students with the chemicals and materials necessary to do all the fun stuff, too, so don't be surprised if you don't get an awesome experiment every week and you have to sometimes just sit down and do the theoretical stuff.

The theoretical elements of chemistry are what most students will struggle with as you can't see what's going on and, in some cases, you'll be doing a lot of maths, too. If numbers aren't your thing, chemistry might seem like an uphill struggle and become one of your least favourite subjects.

Then there's the simple fact that chemistry, like all sciences, can be very challenging with a lot to learn and cover. It's hardly surprising that the study of all matter in the universe is quite comprehensive. Even at primary and secondary school, the level needed in a wide variety of topics can be quite eye-watering.

Chemistry Studied at School

Any student in Edinburgh or Scotland interested in studying chemistry beyond compulsory schooling will probably opt to take the National 4/5 in chemistry before doing a Higher in the subject.

With that in mind, let's see some of the topics they need to be well-versed in to pass the Chemistry National 4 and 5.

For a National 4 in chemistry, pupils will look at chemical changes and structures which includes reactions, atoms, elements, and compounds, and acids and bases. They'll also see nature's chemistry, fuels and hydrocarbons, and consumer products. Finally, chemistry in society includes metals, plastics, and fertilisers.

The National 5 in chemistry builds on these topics and adds rates of reaction, atomic structure, bonding and properties of materials, chemical formulae, moles, and chemical formulae into the mix.

Students will also learn about energy from fuels for nature's chemistry and look at nuclear chemistry for chemistry in society.

There's a lot to cover and if you struggle with chemistry at school (or university, for that matter), you can get a private chemistry tutor to help you.

Keep in mind that while there are plenty of free resources for the GCSE in chemistry, that not all the topics covered are the same so be careful if you choose to use these resources to help you study for your exams.

Private Chemistry Tutoring

Private chemistry tutoring is a great way to help students who are struggling or just those who want to improve their grades or understanding of chemistry.

A private tutor can complement the teaching provided in schools and universities by focusing on the topics covered that a student may not have understood when they covered it in their chemistry lessons.

After all, private tutors tailor their lessons to a single student as opposed to a teacher who may have too many students to look after.

Finding a Private Chemistry Tutor in Edinburgh

If you want to get a tutor to help you with chemistry, just search for one on Superprof. You'll find plenty in and around Edinburgh who are ready to help you with chemistry or any other science. Peruse their profiles and see which is best for you.

Depending on your level, you might be considering getting chemistry tuition for several years. In this case, make sure you view the profile of each tutor carefully, see what they're experienced in, the type of teaching they offer, whether they're familiar with the National or Higher exams (if you're studying for them), and the level they teach.

Don't forget that many offer free tutoring for the first hour so try a few out before deciding on who you'll work with. Make sure you get along with them, too, as the teaching will be far more effective if you're enjoying yourself and you trust your private chemistry tutor.

If you can't find any tutors in Edinburgh that meet your requirements, don't forget that you can always find experienced online tutors who'll provide tuition via webcam.
