As the birthplace of Oasis, The Smiths, and The Bee Gees, Manchester boasts of a rich and thriving music scene. The city has hosted bands and artists in many different genres and continues to be a melting pot for music today, attracting new bands and independent record labels that have recently made Manchester their home. A perfect place to learn how to play the guitar and, who knows, even kick-start your new musical career.
From jazz to electronic, without forgetting classical, music in Manchester can easily accommodate new musicians in all genres, whether you want to learn how to play classical guitar, electronic guitar, or even the bass. Once you’ve chosen your instrument, you can start thinking about how you want to start learning. Do you prefer to be taught by a private guitar instructor that can come to your home for an hour a week, or do you prefer to take group classes and practice your performance skills simultaneously?
There are, of course, pros and cons to both, which is why it’s important to weight your options. Some instructors, like those that you can find on the Superprof platform, understand that initiating guitar lessons can be a huge investment and offer their first lesson for free! That way, you can test out the lesson, as well as the instructor’s teaching method, before committing to more regular lessons.
While you’re probably excited to start tackling your favourite guitar riffs, it’s important to start with the basics. By starting with music theory, you’ll learn everything you need to know to be able to read sheet music and understand even the most complex guitar tabs. By mastering the theory and the different chords, you’ll see that you’ll start playing songs and improvising in no time.
Manchester boasts of a wide variety of music schools and independent instructors that provide guitar lessons throughout the city. Whether you’re starting off as a beginner, or you’d like to perfect your skills to try to make it as a professional guitarist, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Manchester. Starting with the Royal Northern College of Music, one of eleven national conservatoires in the UK.
The conservatoire’s School of Strings hosts the acoustic guitar curriculum, which gives students the opportunity to study and explore the richness of both classical and contemporary music for guitar. Students benefit from weekly one-on-one lessons, and group sessions, where they develop their chamber music and ensemble skills, as well as many performance opportunities.
Attending the conservatoire also has an important benefit. Because it hosts a variety of different specialities and instruments, there is a big opportunity for cross-school collaborations. Besides the School of Strings, you will find the School of Composition, the School of Keyboard Studies, the School of Vocal Studies and Opera, the School of Wind, Brass and Percussion, Conducting, Popular Music and Academic Studies. A host of different masterclasses also give students the opportunity to learn from some internationally-renowned instructors. All in all, everything you need to succeed.
Being the dynamic music hub that it is, Manchester harbours a wide variety of different music schools and independent music instructors. Whether you’re looking for one-on-one tuition with an expert guitarist, or you prefer to join group lessons to perfect your performance skills, you have plenty of options in Manchester.
If you’re interested in learning to play the guitar, but also curious about other instruments and playing in an ensemble, the music schools are likely the best path for you. With students learning the piano, the saxophone, the drums and the guitar, among others, you’ll be surrounded by different musical styles and sounds. Most schools propose one-on-one tuition, including an hour of private lessons a week, and ensemble courses, where students can practice playing to an audience.
The Chetham’s School of Music and the British and Irish Modern Music (BIMM) Institute are two such schools, each offering a musical education at varying levels. Both schools follow a yearly schedule, accepting students in September for a full academic year, and both require an audition.
If you’re not ready to commit to a more well-rounded musical education, you can check out some of the other music schools in Manchester, such as the Maunders School of Popular Music (MSPN), which offers one-on-one and group lessons to students who are looking to improve their guitar skills, but who aren’t necessarily seeking a degree in music. The MSPN offers 30-minute and 60-minute lessons in the evenings and on weekends, to fit in your busy schedule, and they are open to beginners.
You can also find a plethora of independent tutors offering their knowledge and skillsets online, whether it’s through their own websites or via platforms like Superprof, where over 35 personal guitar instructors are waiting just for you!
With an average rate of 20£ an hour, and the first lesson offered for free, getting a personal tutor has never been so easy (or so easy on your wallet). The advantage of studying with a private instructor is that, for a whole hour, they’ll be entirely focused on you. You get to choose the style and some of the songs you want to play, and your instructor will be following closely along to correct your mistakes along the way.
Of course, before you jump to stringing different chords together to form a song, your instructor will be starting with the basics of music theory.
Practice makes perfect, and you’ll see that, by practising the different chords and repeating the different rhythms, you’ll quickly make good progress. The beauty of playing the guitar is that it’s such a versatile instrument that there will always be something new to learn. Whether it’s discovering a new genre or improving your improvisation skills, you’re sure to benefit from your guitar for a very long time.
