There are a lot of benefits to acting classes whether they're for drama lessons, an audition for the theatre, film or television work, or students at a university or conservatoire. Even actors with years of experience regularly work on their acting skills.
The life of an actor isn't an easy one, though, and you'll need to take your drama training seriously, be professional, and take pride in your work.
Birmingham is home to many theatres with shows around the city and even if you're not performing in them, it's always a good idea for anyone with an interest in acting to regularly see what's happening in both theatres and cinemas where they live and have an active interest in the drama scene.
Birmingham also has a few TV and film studios operating so there's an opportunity for aspiring actors to find roles on the small and big screen.
However, before you can take advantage of any of these opportunities, you'll need to ensure that you're a good actor so let's see the benefits of learning how to act, the challenges that you might face, and how to find private tutors to help you.
Even if you're confident of your skills as an actor, you should always be looking for ways to improve and take on board feedback (especially from the people who'll be hiring you). The directors, other actors, and the audience all need to believe your acting or you'll never make it big.
You might be excellent at dramatic moments but struggle to deliver punchlines or comedic parts so rather than just ignoring that part of your dramatic range, it'd be worthwhile to study acting to improve. One trick ponies rarely find work. Drama and acting lessons are a good way to broaden your range or learn new skills to add to your CV.
You can spend years studying how to act at school and university but one of the biggest advantages of learning how to act is the connections you'll make as even the best actor will never find any work if nobody knows who they are. Working with other actors, tutors, and people in the industry is a great way to network and make a name for yourself. Whether it's in theatre school or a private tutorial, you should make sure to network when you can.
While learning how to act and studying acting comes with a lot of benefits, there are also plenty of downsides and challenges you'll need to overcome if you want to make it as an actor.
If you've looked into becoming an actor, you'll know that it's not all fun and games and committing to the life of a professional actor might include years of looking for work and working on your acting skills before the world of showbusiness notices you.
The first challenges an actor might face is realising just how difficult acting can be. If you underestimate acting as just remembering your lines and saying them, you devalue you the entire process and it'll come back to bite you when you start attending auditions. Acting is tough and you need to listen to everyone in the business and take on board their criticism when they're telling you what you need to improve. Is the director being awkward or could you do better?
The criticism can be tough, too. Acting isn't an exact science so a lot of feedback will need to be interpreted carefully to see where you can improve. Additionally, it's not fun being regularly told how you're doing something wrong so you need to take criticism and feedback on the chin and not let it get you down.
Finally, patience is going to be necessary because it can take years to get noticed (if you do get noticed). There are a lot of people aspiring to be actors so don't get disheartened if you don't get noticed immediately. Persistence and improving from feedback are hugely important if you want to overcome the challenges actors regularly face.
There are a lot of acting classes and courses and while there are many reputable programmes at universities and theatres for those learning to act, they're a one-size-fits-all solution and mightn't be perfect for everyone or fit within their schedule.
Private acting tutorials are great for students with specific needs or just those wanting to supplement their courses at school or university. The tailored solution of private tutorials means that you can learn whatever you want to, however you want to.
For example, a tutor could help you work on an audition for getting into a drama school, teach you techniques for a role you're currently in, or work on certain parts of your acting.
You can discuss what you want to work on with your tutor as the class is just for you and it's in their best interest to teach you what you want to learn. Of course, they will advise you and they won't have you running before you can walk (figuratively) but you are still in charge of the course direction.
If you've decided to become an actor or just looking to improve as one, there are plenty of private tutors in and around Birmingham who can help you to improve. A quick search on Superprof and you can have a look at their profiles, see what they specialise in, and see how much they charge per hour.
Don't forget that a lot of tutors offer the first hour for free so organise a few taster sessions with as many of the tutors that you're interested in to see what they're all about. Some might seem right for you on paper but in person may have a teaching style that isn't effective for you.
View their profiles, the type of classes they offer, how much they charge for their lessons, and what their previous students thought of them. Once you've tried a few different tutors out, think long and hard about which one would be best for you and chat to them about making the tutorials a regular thing.
If you can't find any suitable tutors near you, you can always turn to online private tutors who'll help you via the internet. As long as you have a stable connection and a webcam, acting tutors from anywhere in the world can teach you how to improve as an actor.
Finally, there are also group tutorials for those on a budget. Get a few friends together and learn how to act while splitting the cost of the tutor's time. You won't get as much tailored learning from your tutor but the sessions will cost less and you'll have partners to practise acting with.
