Finding the Perfect Acting Tutor in Coventry

Aren't the performing arts wonderful? It's little surprise that so many people are interested in working in film, television, or the theatre. If you've caught the acting bug and are in Coventry, you might be wondering how to get started or how many years of study it may take for you to break into acting and start finding regular work.

Let's look at why it's important you study to become an actor, the challenges aspiring and experienced actors face, what you can learn about drama and the performing arts in school, and how private tuition or tutoring can help you become a better actor.

Why Studying Acting is Important

Acting may be second nature to some, but the vast majority of famous actors have some academic experience with drama and the performing arts. Drama classes are more than standing around rehearsing lines. Drama students learn about the performing arts in general, what it takes to become a professional, the theory behind their art, and a variety of skills that actors require.

In addition to the acting itself, drama students might need other theatre skills like singing, dancing, understanding stage directions, or even nuanced skills like perfecting an accent or the mannerisms of a particular character. They also need to understand how the audience will experience their performance, how to make the comedic lines funny, or how to give dramatic delivery more gravitas.

Drama classes are also where actors can practise their skills. Generally, when you're on stage, you can't really try something out to see if it works as you only get one chance to deliver your line and it needs to be perfect. While you probably get more opportunities for experimentation with film or television, a director mightn't want you to try something untested, especially if you're on a schedule. Classes are an opportunity for experimentation, improvisation, and generally studying the techniques used in your performance.

Challenges in Acting

Anyone in acting will know that it isn't easy. Those getting started with film, television, or the theatre will know that there are far more actors than there are roles going. Even if your acting is impeccable, you'll still encounter quite a few challenges.

Getting parts and landing roles is probably the biggest challenge faced by aspiring actors and acting students. You need to regularly be attending auditions and prepared to deal with rejections. Making that step from aspiring actor to professional actor is the first hurdle you'll have to overcome.

Once you've started getting cast in roles, you'll need to make sure that you nail each performance. If you're working in theatre, you have to get it right as there are no second takes. Certain shows will have you performing multiple times a week and sometimes, multiple times a day. If this is the case, you have to maintain an impeccable level of performance.

While you'll get more takes if you're working in film or television, that doesn't mean that a director or even the other actors will have the patience. Ideally, they'll want you to get it right in as few takes as possible.

Then there's the criticism or reviews. Your work will constantly be under review. Directors will constantly be scrutinising your performances and so will critics. You need a thick skin to be an actor as everyone has an opinion and they'll be certainly be voicing it. That doesn't mean you have to ignore all the criticism you get but rather use it productively to improve your performances.

Areas of Acting Studied in School

For most students in Coventry, they won't have had the opportunity to study drama or the performing arts as a dedicated subject until GCSE. At this stage in their education, they can study a Drama GCSE if their school offers it. English literature courses also offer some lessons on drama but it's not a dedicated subject so it's not really suitable for those really passionate about acting, dance, singing, or the performing arts.

While exactly what they study at GCSE will depend on the exam board, we'll look at the AQA Drama GCSE as an example of what they could study.

A Drama GCSE isn't just about acting. School students will get the chance to learn about theatre roles, dramatic works, staging, and stage positioning. They'll also get a chance to study set design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, and puppet design.

They'll also learn more about the theory behind performance like genre, performance styles, rehearsing, refining, designing productions, and health and safety.

As for acting, they'll learn how to interpret characters physically and through the use of their voice. Generally, as this will be the first time that most students will have really covered any aspect of drama in school, the teaching approach will be quite broad.

Once they've finished their GCSE, they can move onto a Drama A Level. Again, this will depend on whether or not it's offered at their school, sixth form, or college. If not, students can sometimes study these subjects off-campus in an academy or drama school while continuing to study their other subjects at the school or college they usually attend.

From there, students can move onto a degree at university. Others may decide to go straight into acting while continuing their education through private tuition or acting classes.

Private Acting Tuition in Coventry

Acting lessons in school or university mightn't be for everyone. After all, everyone has a different way of learning and actors, especially professional actors, have very specific skills they need to learn for each role.

This is where private tutoring can really help as all the lessons are tailored to the student and what they want or need to learn. With a dedicated teacher, anyone can improve their acting.

If you've decided that private acting lessons are for you, then search for acting tutoring on the Superprof website. You can search for tutors in Coventry or online. Face-to-face tutors are usually more expensive than online tutors via webcam as the former has to consider travel costs but you'll probably learn more quickly as acting is quite a hands-on subject.

For those on a tight budget, group lessons are a good option as each student pays a share of the cost of the lesson. This also means that you'll have a group of other students to work with. Of course, this does mean you won't get as much one-on-one time with your teacher or tutor.

Many of the tutors on Superprof offer free tutoring for the first lesson so try a few different teachers out before deciding which one is best for you.
