The history of chemistry

Chemistry is the study of the reactions between chemicals and substances. Many of these substances are ones that we find in our everyday lives, such as medicines and household products. There are new formulas being discovered and created everyday!

Some of the most important and significant discoveries of the past are those by incredible theoretical and experimental chemists who transformed the world with their discoveries. The list is long for those who helped to change the world:

  • Marie Curie, who discovered radium and polonium
  • John Dalton, who presented the atomic theory
  • Louis Pasteur, who created the process of pasteurization and the vaccine for rabies and anthrax
  • Rosalind Franklin, who discovered the DNA structure in genetics
  • Antoine Lavoisier, the 'Father of Modern Chemistry', who showed the relationship between oxygen and metal as well as how oxygen works in plant and animal respiration
  • Linus Pauling, who did great work in molecular biology and quantum chemistry, and who won a Nobel prize in chemistry in 1954
  • Mario Molina who discovered the ozone hole in the Antarctic and co-discovered the harm that chlorofluorocarbons had on the ozone layer
  • And many others...

Are you inspired by great chemists of our times and in the past? Do you want to make an incredible discovery as well? Perhaps by working in medicinal chemistry or the chemistry of health?

Chemists are often undervalued and the exploration of chemistry is often not well understood.

However, it is integrally important for the world that we live in today! Did you know that the discovery of a way to make ammonia was the single most important reason for the world's population explosion from 1 billion to the 7 billion we have today? One of the most important invention of the 20th century!

It is listed as one of the top 5 chemistry inventions that enabled the modern world: the Haber-Bosch process which allows us to make ammonia used in agriculture fertilizers which helped our food grow. The other 4 are:

  1. Penicillin: Alexander Flemming discovered penicillin in 1928 and in 1939 Howard Florey discovered how to make enough of it to be useful. There's a good chance that on multiple occasions penicillin has saved your life! It is what makes up our antibiotics and helps us fight bacterial infections.
  2. Polythene: Most common plastics are made from polythene, in fact there are 80m tonnes of it made each year! German chemist Hans Von Pechmann accidentally discovered it in 1898. Later, in 1933 a chemical company ICI accidentally discovered it again and this time they figured out how to produce it, which is the recipe that we still use today.
  3. The Pill and the Mexican yam: Hormone-based therapies are used to treat cancers and are used in contraception, however, they were very hard to synthesize until Russel Marker, a organic chemist discovered that he could isolate a molecule from a Mexican yam to make the progesterone he needed; cutting the costs of production from 800 pounds per gram to just a couple pounds today.
  4. The LCD screen: In 1970 George Gray discovered how to make LCD's function by inventing a molecule known as 5CB. By the late 1970s and early 80s, 90% of LCD devices contained 5CB and it can still be found today, even though we're moved past it into other technology now. At the time it made phones, computers and TV's possible!
