Director - Tutorfair Foundation

This role is all about making a difference. Don’t feel that you have to spend your days doing something boring, unfulfilling, or that you’re not really excited about. Instead, join us to build a charity to combat educational inequality and open up opportunities for everyone.

Tutorfair Foundation is an education charity established to reduce educational inequality by providing tutoring to those who would not ordinarily benefit. It works in partnership with, one of the UK’s leading market places for tutoring, which collects a donation with every lesson to fund the Foundation, and gives access to its base of tutors.

The Foundation:

  • …has helped over 8000 students in 38 schools.
  • …has run programs to let tutors volunteer in schools across all stages of the curriculum, a typical program gives volunteers training, 10 hours of volunteering and then feedback from the teacher.
  • …is currently piloting a homework helpline for GCSE maths with on demand volunteering
  • …partners with other charities e.g. Crowd Scholar and Bright Futures
  • …works in the same office as a tech start-up Tutorfair

Tutorfair - is at the stage where we have a fully functional product and thousands of tutors and clients. We have a clear roadmap of how to improve and ensure that the company continues to grow. We’re currently the largest of our kind in London, and are looking to expand across the country. With our investors from Secret Escapes, Toptable, HouseTrip and Achica we are focused and committed to becoming the way that everyone books their tutors.

The role:

You will oversee the effective delivery and expansion of Tutorfair Foundation programmes, both in-school and online. As the charity’s director, you will also be expected to set the vision and formulate the strategy for future programme delivery.

Achieving this will involve:

  • Strategy - you will be responsible for setting the vision for the future of the charity, developing the strategy to hit the key deliverables and ensuring that funds are available for the continued delivery of the charity programs.
  • Marketing and recruitment - Developing the marketing materials to bring in new school partners, to recruit new volunteers and to enthuse the tutor and client community with the work of the Foundation.
  • Fundraising - Submitting written application and delivering in-person pitches to potential donors.
  • Recruitment and line management - Depending on the time of year, you will work with between 4 and 9 sub-contractors. Recruiting quality people and ensuring they meet their targets is a major part of this role.
  • Digital product management - Tutorfair Foundation relies heavily on its digital assets. Continual product development and maintenance is, therefore, crucial to operations. Product development is how we will drive the efficiency forward and deliver quality tuition, to disadvantaged students, at a fraction of its current cost.
  • Relationship management - Maintaining and developing the relationships with key external stakeholders
  • Training design and delivery - Adapting the tutor training sessions in response to feedback and delivering the sessions to new recruits.
  • Governance and budgeting - present your vision and plans to the trustees, report back on the delivery, and ensure that all the regulatory and good governance requirements are met.

Your experience:

You can’t stop yourself from organising things around you: you will have made a difference to the organisations you have worked with, and left them better than you found them.

You have effortlessly excellent communication skills: you are able to chat to clients and tutors from all walks of life, from a concerned parent to a PhD astrophysicist. You can write blogs, reports and plans and win people over to your ideas.

You are passionate about reducing educational inequality. You will have read and be able to talk about the issues and possible solutions to educational inequality.

You have done some teaching or tutoring yourself: knowing the industry that we are working in and being able to offer suggestions from the front line is important to establish credibility with schools, tutors and other partners.

"Nice to haves"

You have experience using a range of CRMs: we use Salesforce to manage volunteers through the application and placement process. So it would be great if you had some familiarity with that. No worries if not, we’ll get you up to speed in no time.

You have 2+ years of professional experience or proof that you can make stuff happen: Attitude is more important than experience, but bonus marks if you’ve already mastered managing a team and execution of projects you promised yourself you’d do.

You are a good listener: absorbing and empathising with a stakeholder’s issue is the first step to solving it.

You are an independent thinker: this is a problem solving role, and you’ll relish predicting problems before they arise, and finding solutions for problems you never thought of. You will actively contribute to the company’s evolution and enjoy making things better.

You are data savvy: you have the know how (even if basic) on how to interpret data and plan from it.

What does the future with us look like?

We aim for the Foundation to be at the heart of the Tutorfair community of tutors and clients. Your work will inspire and engage thousands of supporters with our mission, and in doing so make education fairer.

We’re a small team taking on a big opportunity. We work together in the same room and have lunch together every day. Each person has their own area of focus (marketing, analytics, product, coding), and you’ll often find yourself jumping in to help someone or asking someone to help you. This is a chance to make great friends and get fully involved in making a business and charity flourish.

Compensation and useful info

  • From £25k+ salary (depending on experience) + bonus + stock options
  • Office in a Farringdon co-working space
  • Great transport links (we tube, train, and cycle to the office)
  • Laptop
