A new school is a daunting prospect. Here are five tips for parents to help your children:

1. Allow your child to feel whatever they are feeling

Tell your child that it’s normal to feel whatever they are feeling. Be careful not to invalidate those feelings by saying ‘don’t be silly, you don’t feel nervous’. If they want to tear-up, let them. Most people feel a lot better after letting off a bit of steam. Empathise with their concerns. Agree that you too would be worried about such a thing.

It’s a delicate day for everyone. Parents have to deal with stressed children and young students have to deal with their parents and teachers, their results and their peers’ results.

It’s inevitably an emotional rollercoaster for them and however good their results may be, they now also have to deal with moving into a new phase of their lives. Some may be full of anxiety about what the future holds. Going to the university or college of choice can be intimidating and a past success can represent a burden in that it is a standard to be maintained in the future.

Digital Summer Camp - Schools Day hosted by TechMix, took place last week on the 12th of July. For those of you not familiar: Digital Summer Camp was designed for tech companies to showcase their latest digital learning technologies, hottest gadgets, digital innovations and projects to the participating school students and teachers. Students enjoyed a range of activities - from building robots to hacking the web - beware @pentagon.
