Using Free Time to Make a Difference - Tristan's Story

I studied engineering at University and at the start of the pandemic I was working at my first engineering job. I was made redundant from that job around October last year. With all the free time I now had, I wanted to do something a bit more technical and interesting. Being a little dyslexic, when I was at school and university I'd had to establish a way of learning that allowed me to actually retain the information. I wanted to see if I could help someone else achieve this whilst also being able to geek out on the subjects I'd enjoyed learning.

Does online tutoring work for you?

I found online tutoring worked very well for me. The approach I took was to try and enhance what they were learning in their classrooms. So I would focus on exercises similar to what they'd do in school. This meant there was already a basic level of understanding and I think working online might have actually help them identify areas they were struggling with. Since they had to put a bit more effort into explaining what they were doing it became more obvious if there were areas they didn't fully understand. I could then go over with them in more detail.

How does the technology affect your tutoring?

The software can maybe be a bit clunky but I was able to get it to work. I never really got used to using my mouse to write on the whiteboard. However, being able to good practice questions or exam papers on the screen and work through them together like we were both sitting the same test was a very useful tool. Especially as I could see exactly how they explained their answers as they answered them and could ensure they put enough detail.

Would you recommend the program to other tutors?

I would certainly recommend it to anyone who has time for it. It feels really good to help out in these times. And since it's online you are able to work from your own desk which makes it really convenient.
