The Tutorfair Foundation’s first 150 hours of Online Volunteer Tutoring

Image For the last seven years, we have delivered an in-school programme – connecting a community of skilled and experienced volunteer tutors with students from low-income backgrounds, providing weekly one-to-one and small group support during the school day.

With the schools closed, something entirely new was needed. Not only a new approach to connecting volunteers with the students who need their help, but a new approach to everything. We set about developing recruitment, vetting and training processes that we can deliver entirely online. We undertook new risk assessments; introducing safeguarding policy and procedure that would be fit for purpose in our new, online world. Finally, we rewrote our partnership agreement and reached out to schools across London to start helping their students.

Now, we are delivering more than 40 hours of one-to-one tutoring each week in a safe and fun online classroom, and we’re delighted to have delivered more than 150 lessons since the programme went live. All of our online lessons are hour-long one-to-one sessions, with the focus on providing a stimulating, interactive experience and addressing individual knowledge gaps. The aim is for every student to receive a course of at least 10 hours of tutoring, and we work with schools to connect lessons meaningfully to the rest of the students’ online learning.

Our goal now is to deliver more than 300 lessons before the schools formally close for Summer and make our free tutoring available through the Summer break to support those organisations, schools and individuals who need support to catch up before September.

The online programme will continue to run alongside our in-school programme through next academic year, and we are hoping specifically to make the support available to schools and organisations outside of major cities who will struggle to access other third-sector tutoring initiatives.

Finally, we must give our thanks to the wonderful volunteers who make our programmes possible and the clients of Tutorfair.com who do so much to help fund our organisation.
