Free Maths Tutoring - Emily's Story

The Tutorfair On-Demand app recently launched, providing free maths tutoring to students at 5 pilot schools. We heard what it's like to volunteer through the app, but what impact does it make on the students? We spoke to year 11 student Emily and her teacher, to find out.

What's it like to receive free maths tutoring?

Emily's been the most active student on Tutorfair On-Demand so far! Her favourite subject is history and she wants to be a primary school teacher when she's older.

We asked Emily what keeps her using the app. She said she likes, "that you can communicate with different tutors and they can explain it in more detail than the teachers can in class." She would recommend the app to other students, "because if you are struggling with maths then they can explain it to you, even if it's a 'stupid' question. For example, I asked them what a prime number was, even though I had definitely learnt that already!"

What difference does free maths tutoring make for teachers?

We caught up with Emily's teacher to get their opinion too. She said, "it's been incredibly useful for them to have the opportunity to ask those ‘stupid’ questions that they might not feel able to ask myself or any other teacher at the school. It's been great to read their transcripts. I've seen how brilliant the tutors have been at diagnosing the issue and taking it right back to basics where necessary."

The teacher has been thrilled to be a part of the pilot. She said, "it's been really exciting! It sounded great when I first heard about it. I was really looking forward to seeing how the students responded to it. Whenever I see students outside of lessons they are glued to their phones, so I think they like that they can revise using their phones!"

It was clear that Emily's teacher has had an influence on her forward-thinking approach! She also had a vision for the future of the app and told us, "I’m just really excited to watch Tutorfair On-Demand develop over the coming years. It has such scope to expand into other subjects, and provide detailed feedback to schools about the areas students are struggling. And for the first time (that I have seen), this amazing tutoring is now available in the most remote areas so we can really begin to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged students and their peers."

Isn't that what it's all about! If you'd like to use the app for your students, sign up your school today.
