Empowering Students through Volunteering - Shilpa's Story

July 13, 2021 by Tas F
Image Engineering graduate Shilpa feels honoured for the opportunity to empower students through volunteering.  She joined the Foundation earlier this year to help support some of the UK's most deprived students with their learning. Building on the flexibility of remote tutoring, Shilpa supported many students with their maths. Here, she tells us more....

A the bit about you – your story up to now and where you are after the lockdown!

Hi, I am a Computer Science and Engineering graduate with a first class and honours degree in Bachelor of Technology from India under WBUT.  I have been the consistent topper of my state and university. Post graduation, I decided to pursue a career in teaching and I joined South Point High school in West Bengal (the largest school in Asia till 1993) as a Computer Science teacher where I taught for more than four and a half years.

After coming to the United Kingdom in 2017, I started teaching in various schools; London Stratford Academy, Kelmscott High School, Roden Valley High School etc. I started tutoring children in different subjects mainly Mathematics, English and Computer Science to students of different age groups; from year 4 to year 10 and GCSE. The Tutofair Foundation has helped and guided me a lot with the necessary documents required to tutor in the United Kingdom.

I am currently looking for an opportunity to study a PGCE with QTS in the UK and continue tutoring with the Foundation.

How have you found tutoring online? Does it fit OK with the way you like to tutor? Do you enjoy it or do you find it taxing?

Overall the teaching experience has completely changed with tutoring via online platforms this change happened due to the start of the pandemic. Online tutoring is a very flexible an innovative solution.  It is an approach that makes both teaching learning experience more enjoyable and interactive.

It is geographically independent as teaching can be done from anywhere in the world. Live lessons are more globally accessible via the Internet. I find it effective to tutor a student online especially during a pandemic because it keeps both the teacher and the student safe. I completely enjoy tutoring online.

How have you found the technology? What issues have you had and have you managed to find solutions?

The online platform Bramble is an excellent interactive platform where both tutor and students can collaborate and work through tasks simultaneously.  Lesson recordings ensure safety for both parties.  Students can also revise the lessons taught in class from the PDF extract generated.  The export facility helps teachers/tutors to plan their next lesson based on progress made in the previous lesson.

Would you recommend the programme to other tutors? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I would 100% recommend the programme to other tutors as it is safe and a very interactive, enhanced and enjoyable experience for both the tutors and the students. Other tutors should definitely give it a try.

Are there any other comments you'd like to add?

I would like to thank all the members of the tutor her foundation team for being so supportive throughout my journey with them. I am grateful and honoured to be a part of this noble cause.
