What got you into volunteer tutoring?
Hi, I'm Sarah, 25, from County Durham. I went to uni to study maths and then decided to follow my passion for education and become a teacher. I have been a teacher now for 4 years and absolutely love it. Covid has provided a new challenge to it this year with having to move everything online. We had to manage remote learning with students who didn't have internet or a device at home. More than ever we had to balance the mental health of the students with the workload we gave them. Throughout uni and my career I always tutored people privately and the pandemic made me realise that the students who are unable to access private tutoring are those who stand to benefit from it the most. This is when I found Tutorfair Foundation.
How have you found the programme so far?
Tutorfair Foundation has made it really easy to balance tutoring with my job. I am able to tutor at a time that suits me and they are flexible to allow me to still enjoy my holidays. They are always on hand during sessions if there is an issue and I always feel really looked after when tutoring through them.
How has the technology worked with your teaching style?
The technology they use is incredible. Myself and my tutee are able to both write on the same thing at the same time, allowing for seamless tutoring. You can easily input other documents to help you with your sessions. You have the choice whether to put cameras on or stick to the workbook. It allows everyone to feel comfortable and means sessions run effectively.
Would you recommend volunteer tutoring?
I would strongly recommend Tutorfair Foundation to anyone considering tutoring. As a teacher I see the impact tutoring can have on a students’ confidence and ability and to be able to offer that to those most in need is really rewarding. Tutorfair Foundation makes it easy to do and takes all the stress of tutoring away.
