A little bit about you - your story up to now!
I am one of those fortunate individuals who work in finance and was able to work from home when Covid-19 kicked off. I live with my partner and pet cat (who is not so glad we're at home all the time now!). I've always toyed with the idea of tutoring and thought now was a better time than ever to begin given the commuting time I saved, as well as the number of schools which were unable to open.
How have you found tutoring online? Does it fit OK with the way you like to tutor? Do you enjoy it or are you finding it taxing?
Tutoring online has worked perfectly for me as this means I can quickly switch between my work from home day job to the teaching platform. This has meant I can be more efficient than usual and actually be able to make time to volunteer with the Foundation.
How have you found the technology? What issues have you had and have you managed to find solutions?
The technology has largely been fine - there have been days where the online platform glitches out or students are not able to use it properly for one reason or another. Sometimes I would ask students to try and solve a question to demonstrate their understanding (instead of me rambling on) so this makes it a bit difficult. To get round this, I would scribe for the students as they talk me through their thought processes.
Would you recommend the programme to other tutors? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend the programme to other tutors without hesitation assuming you're comfortable with the technology! Particularly given the current environment, it provides a safe forum to be able to help students who have missed out on invaluable learning time. The foundation is on hand to support throughout the day and is excellent with ensuring timings of sessions fit around your personal/work life.
