1,000 Hours of Free Tutoring in Islington

Image During summer 2020, we enjoyed an exciting new partnership with Upward Bound UK - an education programme based in Islington, London. Together, we delivered more than 300 hours of free, 1:1 tutoring to less advantaged Year 9 and 10 students whose education had been severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year saw the expansion of this partnership, supported by Betty Messenger Charitable Foundation, with the aim of delivering an additional 1,000 hours of 1:1 tutoring to the students who need it most.

About the project

From January 2021, we engaged 63 incredible volunteer tutors who delivered 1,014 hours of tutoring to 92 students. Participating students came from Upward Bound UK, from Hestia (a charity supporting victims of modern slavery) and from self-referrals through our website.

50 of the 63 participating volunteers were already experienced tutors, but 37 of them were new to volunteering. In total, new tutors participated in more than 49 hours of training including one-to-one and small group sessions.

Positive feedback from students and tutors

96% of students report that they got on well with their tutor and 89% said that their tutor made them enjoy learning. Overwhelmingly, students report feeling more confident about their subject and about school in general. They gave their experience an average overall rating of 4.6 out of 5!

Similarly, tutors report a positive experience, with 97% of volunteers saying they would recommend the experience to a friend. They gave an average overall rating of 4.4 out of 5, reporting high levels of engagement and progress from students.

“The support that Upward Bound students have received from Tutorfair Foundation has made a real impact. Partnering with Tutorfair has meant we can offer our cohort the 1-to-1 support they need. This level of support would be out of reach for many of our students. We have received very positive feedback from our families about the quality of the teaching they have received.”

An enormous thank you!

Finally, we must extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who contributed to the project. The same goes for the Trustees of Betty Messenger Charitable Foundation who made this happen. Without your continued support, we would not have been able to reach these students at such a crucial time.
