There's something about the theatre and acting that makes it so appealing. Whatever your reasons for acting, you can always improve your performance by studying and rehearsing.
Whether you study drama at school, university, an academy, or with a private tutor, there are a few things you should know. Let's see why studying acting is so important, the challenges actors face, what you learn about the subject at school, how private acting tutoring can help, and how to find an acting tutor in Leicester.
While it's true that some actors have an innate talent for the performing arts, even they'll have studied acting at some point during their career. Acting requires a lot of different skills and acting classes or lessons can ensure aspiring and professionals actors are ready for whatever the industry throws at them.
Before every audition, you need to make sure that you have the skills and dramatic range necessary for the part. Similarly, education in acting and the performing arts will teach you more about what goes on behind the scenes, the nuance required in a given performance, and the theory behind everything you do on stage or in front of a camera.
Acting is tough work and that's if you can find work. The first challenge that actors face is landing roles and making a career out of it. Even incredibly talented actors may struggle to find work or make a name for themselves as there are far more actors than there are roles to fill. You'll also have to make sure that you're incredibly professional when you are working as you'll want them to think of you for their next project.
In addition to being professional, you also have to provide a good performance. If you're working on stage in a play or a musical, your performance has to be perfect every time. When performing on stage, your performance is essentially your CV and could land you your next role. If you're working in film or TV, your performances will have to be good but, as we mentioned, you'll also want to ensure that the production enjoys working with you and will have you back for their next one.
Then there are reviews to worry about. As an actor, everything you do will be critiqued and reviewed. While feedback is important as it can help you improve your subsequent performances, you have to have thick skin. Take the critique or criticism and don't let it get you down.
If you're still in school and have an interest in drama or the performing arts, the GCSE in Drama will probably be your first opportunity to study theatre or acting in a dedicated class. You may have some experience with drama as part of your English Literature classes, but if you're passionate about it, you'll want to pick drama as one of your GCSEs.
There are several exam boards that offer a GCSE in Drama so we'll be taking the AQA exam as an example. The Drama GCSE you take may not include all of these topics.
Students will learn about the theatre, how shows and plays are put together, and the roles everyone plays in a production; not just the actors! You'll learn about characteristics of dramatic work, staging, and stage positioning, for example. A Drama GCSE can also cover set design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, and puppet design.
As for acting, you'll learn about interpreting a character physically and through the use of your voice. Your classes will cover concepts such as responding to stimuli, developing ideas, performance styles and genres, rehearsing, refining, and health and safety considerations.
Any school student serious about acting should opt to take the Drama GCSE if their school offers it. If they don't, you may need to either study it elsewhere or get involved with local theatres or productions. After GCSE, you can move onto Drama at A Level in school, sixth form, or college.
From there, a university degree in drama or performing arts is always an option. Others may choose to start their acting career at this point but continue learning about the performing arts through private tuition or theatre classes.
Acting and the performing arts are the type of subjects that work great with private tutors. As actors have very specific skills they need to learn, some classes may be too broad to teach you exactly what you need to know. Private tuition will be tailored to you so if there's something you need to work on, your tutor will make sure that it gets covered.
If you're still in school, college, or university, they can help you rehearse or revise for practical or written exams. If you're trying to make it as an actor or auditioning for a role, they can offer feedback on your performance, lessons focusing on skills necessary to the role, or even just spend time going over your lines with you.
If you're looking for tutors in Leicester, just search for acting and performing arts tutors on the Superprof website. Take the time to view each tutor's profile, see what experience they have, how much they charge, and what their other students had to say about them.
There are also online tutors who provide their teaching via webcam. As long as you have a decent internet connection and a webcam, you can learn about acting, singing, dance, or any of the performing arts from professional tutors all over the world. While acting is certainly more of a hands-on subject, online tutorials are usually cheaper as the tutor doesn't have any travel costs to consider.
Many of the tutors on the Superprof website offer their first lesson for free. Use these free lessons to trial a few different tutors before choosing the one that's right for you.
