Psychology and You

As a Psychology student, you will learn some very important and valuable lessons concerning self-love and appreciation. In these current times, even before a global pandemic, these are such important things to acknowledge, especially for our younger generations who are entering a very confusing world right now.

When did the shift to Psychology happen?

It was in the late 19th century that psychology as a scientific discipline began to emerge, with German scientist Wilhelm Wundt founding a laboratory that carried out psychological research exclusively. This initial laboratory was located in Leipzig and studied psychology as a self-conscious field.

But interest in philosophy and the mind began way back when ancient civilisations roamed the planet. Scientific would have been so little advanced then, though, that it would have been impossible to carry out any type of experimental research.

Studying Psychology in Higher Education

Did you know that you can study Psychology at A-Level and also beyond high school by choosing the subject or related topics to specialise in at university? Many universities offer degree-level courses in Psychology as well as Masters, so if you know you want a career in Psychology then these are certainly great options for you and will lead you down a specific career path.

"Universities and colleges in the UK offer a wide range of courses, including in specialist areas such as Applied psychology, Child psychology, Clinical psychology, Developmental psychology, Educational psychology, Experimental psychology, Forensic psychology, Social psychology, Sport psychology, Psychology" - UCAS

While all of these sound fascinating, you are sure to find a niche area of psychology that really draws you to it! And if you don't know just yet, then you can hire a tutor who can help you to discover your strengths and interests.

Psychology Degree - What to Expect

Although the contents of a degree course will vary slightly from establishment to establishment and no two will take the same teaching approaches, one Psychology degree will usually cover the same, if not similar, content as another due to the subject being reliant on science.

For instance, you will explore the science behind the brain's behaviour covering a range of situations in an attempt to understand how it processes and responds to information. In addition, you'll consider how Science underpins the discipline of Psychology.

You will usually study a set of introductory course modules and then gain credits from additional, optional modules which you are free to choose from. These optional modules may vary slightly from year to year due to the availability of teaching staff and changes within the field but most unis will offer a wide range of areas to choose from.

You may also, during your time at the university, be invited to take part in educational visits and trips, such as to museums or to workplaces.

Careers in Psychology

The British Psychological Society explains on its website that: "Because all practising psychologists must have postgraduate qualifications there isn’t a fast track route to a career in psychology.

To become a Chartered Psychologist, you will first need to gain Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) by completing an accredited degree or conversion course, and then go on to receive further training in the specific field of psychology that you want to work in.

It is important to consider that it will take at least six years to become a fully qualified Psychologist, which includes a full three-year degree and three years of postgraduate training."

According to UCAS.com, however, there are many clear paths for those with a Psychology background, such as becoming a Counselling psychologist, Forensic psychologist, Clinical psychologist, Educational psychologist, Further education teacher, Occupational psychologist, Health psychologist, or High-intensity therapist.

Studying Psychology in Glasgow

The University of Glasgow boasts its very own School of Psychology where you can study towards an undergraduate degree in the subject and more. A BA Hons degree is also available at the University of Strathclyde for eligible pupils, a course that is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Glasgow Caledonian University, meanwhile, offers career-focused courses such as Psychology as well, with the aim of getting students prepared for the profession.

Glasgow Clyde College is an option for those seeking A-Level courses, with an excellent department that can help to prepare you for your next step in education.

Studying Psychology Online

As you probably well know, there is an abundance of information on the Internet, and that extends to education. Not only can you find out facts and information online about Psychology and the sciences, but you can also learn digitally too and sign up for many e-courses.

There are many educational establishments offering independent learning courses, where you study independently before gaining accreditation. You can use The Open University or a number of other similar education experts to acquire a recognised qualification, or you can opt for training courses and workshops aimed at subjects like mental health.

What's more though, you can hire a tutor to help you explore the field of Psychology. This could be your exclusive means of learning about the subject or you could hire a private tutor to support your other college or university course and help you keep on top of things like coursework and exam preparation.
